Sony Creates 11Gbps Wireless Technology

The new tech and high data rate mean that Sony TVs are going wireless, but not in the way you might think.

Sony announced today that they’ve created a new wireless technology capable of sending data at eleven gigabits per second over short ranges. Very short ranges, in fact.

The new tech is able to shoot data up to a distance of fourteen millimeters through the air at an incredibly fast rate. That’s not far enough to do us much good for sending wireless video or even connecting our Blu-ray players and our TVs, but Sony says the new tech isn’t made for external use.

By utilizing this wireless technology, Sony says they’ll be able to make televisions slimmer and cheaper than ever before. Wireless transmissions improve the life of the product too, according to Sony’s press release. “Because the data transfer occurs without contact, this enhances the reliability of movable and detachable parts within the product.”

The press release also states that a range of 50mm can be achieved with high directivity antennas. Since the antenna and receiver are so close together, it seems unlikely that interference could be a problem.

Vizio TVs are Going Wireless

Thanks to a partnership with SiBEAM, some of Vizio’s higher end televisions will come with Wireless-HD built right in.

Vizio has come a long way in the last few years. They developed an early reputation for being the best of the entry level HD televisions, but have been stepping up to offer all the same things that the larger and more established companies do. LED backlighting and 120Hz refresh rates are common features of Vizio TVs now and later this year, they’re taking it up a notch farther.

The XVT Pro LCD LED HDTVs – Vizio’s top of the line televisions – will feature wireless HD, something that’s not common at all. “By incorporating WirelessHD into a range of new products, VIZIO will be among the first to introduce wireless solutions to the mainstream market,” says Matthew McRae, Vizio’s VP of Products.

Vizio will be utilizing SiBEAM’s second generation transmitter and receiver chipsets, which offer comparable functionality to their first chipset, but at a substantially reduced cost. The new chips operate at 60 GHz, which means that the signal won’t interfere with wireless telephones or wireless internet.

Using the new chips, you’ll be able to shoot audio and video from your source to your television at 4 gigabits per second.

With transfer rates of 4Gbps, or 500MB per second, Vizio promises a lossless 1080p Full HD resolution.

Three Days Until Wireless HDMI Legal In UK

Wait, wireless HDMI wasn’t legal?!

Never fear videophiles, the UK has your back. No longer will you have to avoid having your cop friend over for movie night, and you’ll be able to enjoy your home theater with the windows open without fear of someone seeing your illegal hookup. That’s right, for the few of you that have it, wireless HDMI will be legal in the UK this Friday.

Ofcom, the British regulatory committee of such things, should be applauded for their quick action in getting regulations ready for the new technology. After a relatively quick process, and with a few necessary exceptions regarding frequencies available for use, the UK is now ready for wireless HDMI. Of course, those that already have it and use it before Friday are still technically breaking regulations. Enjoy the rush, folks.
