PlayStation Vita Games Will be Cheaper to Download than at Retail
Tue Dec 06, 2011 at 09:30 AM ETTags: PlayStation Vita, Vita Memory Cards, Digital Distribution (all tags)
Sony's expensive memory cards are a bummer, but games purchased digitally will run between 20% and 40% cheaper.
Last week we found out that Sony's proprietary Vita memory cards would be prohibitively expensive. And even did a bit of doomsaying on the subject. Happily, it turns out that there's more to the story.
PlayStation Vita memory cards may be expensive, but the games sold for the Vita will be cheaper when purchased as a download than as a physical copy at retail. Eliminating the need for packaging and shipping spurs cheaper prices - it just makes sense.
The price difference hasn't been nailed down exactly yet. In Japan, the difference is around 20%, but according to a source that spoke to Joystiq, we could be seeing games at a 40% discount.

Sony's Vita Memory Cards are Insanely Expensive

Want 32 gigs of space to store your games? That'll be $119 please.
Sony sure paints a pretty picture of the PlayStation Vita. You can buy games at retail, but if you prefer to get your games digitally, you can download them right to proprietary memory cards and play them right from there. It's a pretty slick setup.
That's until you look at the prices Sony wants for these memory cards. Want four gigs of save space? You'll be paying $29.99. Eight gigs will cost you $44.99, 16GB runs $69.99 and you can shell out $119 if you want a 32GB card. Seriously Sony?
Just for laughs, let's compare Sony's prices with the cost of SD cards on the market today. We pulled all these prices straight from Newegg. There were only two 4GB SDHC cards listed, and both of them came in at $6.99 - a far cry from Sony's $29.99, but here's where it gets really bad.
For $31.99, just two dollars more than the Sony Vita 4GB card, you can get a 32GB Class 4 SDHC card from PNY. For $109 you can get a 64GB Class 10 SDXC card. Yikes.
