Indie Vanguard has confirmed that it will close out its HD DVD support with the June release of 'Disco Pigs,' and that it plans to begin releasing titles on Blu-ray later this year.

Although Vanguard says there will be no official statement to come, the company has released an updated high-def release schedule that confirms they will no longer issue any new titles on the format following the June 24 HD DVD debut of the Cillian Murphy-starrer 'Disco Pigs.'

Also nixed from the company's schedule were two previously-announced HD DVD releases, 'The Low Life' and 'Animal Room.'

When asked for comment on Vanguard's future high-def plans, a company rep told us that a move to Blu-ray is currently in the planning stages for later this year. Initial titles and street date information are yet to be determined, however, so we expect to have additional information in the coming months.

As always, we'll keep you posted on further details of Vanguard's transition to Blu-ray as they're announced.

In the meantime, we've removed 'Animal Room' and 'The Low Life' from our HD DVD Release Schedule.

Vanguard Cinema has announced plans to bring the indie film 'Rain in the Mountains' to HD DVD this February.

Directed by Joel Metlen and Christine Sullivan, 'Rain in the Mountains' is billed as an unusual comedy about a Native American man who, after failing to reconnect with the lost customs of his people, drops out of society and soon runs afoul of the authorities. Although well-received on the festival circuit, the film never received a domestic theatrical release, and will instead go direct-to-video, premiering on HD DVD day-and-date with the standard-def DVD on February 26, 2008.

Suggested retail for the HD DVD will be $29.95.

The release marks the second next-gen title from indie film distributor Vanguard, who first jumped into the high-def fray earlier this month, announcing plans for their debut HD DVD title, 'Channels.' (The distributor has not yet announced any plans to support Blu-ray.)

At press time, no tech specs or supplemental details were available for 'Rain in the Mountains,' aside from 1080p video. As always, we'll keep you posted.

Indie distributor Vanguard Cinema has announced it will make its high-def debut with an HD DVD-exclusive release of 'Channels' this January.

Starring Ed Asner and Joan Van Ark, 'Channels' tells the story of a Hollywood producer whose recurring dream becomes reality when a late-night session of channel surfing magically brings a deceased soap opera character into his living room.

Apparently eschewing a theatrical release, Vanguard will bring the dramatic comedy straight to video on January 22, when it bows the film on both HD DVD and standard DVD. (No Blu-ray version has been announced.)

The distributor has not yet released any specs or supplemental details for either version, other than a $29.99 MSRP for the high-def version.

We'll keep you posted when full specs are confirmed.

Meanwhile,, you'll find the latest disc details for 'Channels' linked from our HD DVD Release Schedule, where it is indexed under January 22, 2008.
