New Trailer Suggests that 'Assassin's Creed IV' is Just a Veiled Game About Pirates

Ubisoft's yearly 'Assassin's Creed' seems to be slumming into pirate waters.

'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' is the sixth console title for the 'Assassin's Creed' franchise, and when it releases this fall, it will be the sixth console title from the franchise in six years.

The game's setting is quite awkwardly set in an era prior to 'Assassin's Creed III,' (e.g. 1715,) but will nevertheless be considered a sequel in the story due to the over-arching modern day storyline involving the Animus and ancestors of assassins.

With the latest trailer highlighting what seem to really be the meat of the new game, the era of pirates and its correlating gameplay, the franchise is being called into question. The growing perception that the franchise has been water downed ever since the second game seems to be shifting towards an issue of Ubisoft's overall direction. Simply put, why not give the franchise a rest, and just develop a new IP for a pirates' game?

So long as the series continues to sell well, while other titles miss sales targets, it is likely that the yearly releases will continue regardless of how sprawling a reach must be to go from sequel to sequel/prequel. 'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' is coming to the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC and PS4 on October 29th, and is available for pre-order.

The World of 'Watch Dogs' Explained from the Inside

Node by node explanation highlights the how and why of the title's protagonist.

Ever since its E3 premier, Ubisoft's 'Watch Dogs' has captivated audiences with its world of dramatic manipulation of electronic information. Any yet, somewhere between the high concept compromised data concerns and its run-and-gun protagonist Aiden Pearce, have been stunning visuals but vague motivations.

A new trailer from Ubisoft follows Aiden Pierce through a previously revealed scenario, wherein both means and rational of the character is detailed. That detail comes from an in-game narrator under the guise of a 'CTOS Threat Monitoring Report.' Distinct from Aiden Pierce and the civil bureaucracy that he is exploiting is another unknown hacker, at one point dubbed 'PixxelFD.'

'Watch Dogs' has thus far been announced for the PC, PS3, 360, Wii U, and PS4. The game is expected before the end of the year and can be pre-ordered here.

Downloadable title returns the series to the Old West.

Ubisoft has set March 14th as the reveal date for gameplay for 'Call of Juarez: Gunslinger,' a downloadable shooter scheduled for XBLA, PSN, and the PC.

'Call of Juarez: Gunslinger' is the fourth installment of the series. Partly in a response to poor reception to the modern setting of 'Call of Juarez: Cartel,' the new game will return the series to the Old West. The story is framed around the flashbacks of bounty hunter and is filled with various infamous western legends such as Butch Cassidy and Billy the Kid.

Development is once again being handled by series regular, Techland.

Day of the Jackal: Ubisoft Bids on THQ

MCV reports that Ubisoft is looking for a "bargain buy."

Holidays or no holidays, THQ has made its largest play to date to stave off oblivion with its recent Chapter 11 filing. In so doing, THQ also managed to secure capital from would-be owners Clearlake investments.

As THQ continues to develop games, the removal of the publisher's $100 million debt is part and parcel of a 'stalking horse bid' process. MCV is reporting that pursuant to Ubisoft's goal of becoming the market's No. 1 publisher, the French firm is looking to acquire THQ in one form or another. MCV further describes Ubisoft as "prepared to hold-out until THQ is forced to sell off specific assets, as happened to now-defunct Midway when it went into bankruptcy four years ago."

Ubisoft Wii U Ports Cost Just Over a Million Bucks

Apparently, there's not much of a cost tied in to moving a game over to the Wii U. New games are similarly inexpensive to make.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, in talking about research and development costs for the Wii U, revealed today that ports to the system are incredibly cheap to produce. He says that ports are running around a million euros, or right around $1.2 million. Considering the cost of games, that's a crazy inexpensive way to get a whole new audience buying your titles.

"The two games that are original are ZombiU and Rayman Legends, so those ones of course are more expensive," he says, "but we are not talking about games today, like we were spending on Ghost Recon or Assassin's Creed. So they are much smaller of cost.

'Assassin's Creed 3' May Be Getting a Season Pass

Tags: Assassin's Creed III, Ubisoft, Assassin's Creed (all tags)

The idea is to give you a discount on future DLC with the caveat that you have to pay up front.

If you're a die-hard 'Assassin's Creed' fan and you absolutely know that you're going to delve into 'Assassin's Creed 3' and all its DLC then you may be in luck. Rumor has it Ubisoft is going to give players the option of purchasing a Season Pass which would give you future DLC at a nice low price.

The Season Pass is a relatively new concept to gaming, but it's one that could prove a benefit to both game makers and fans alike. For fans, a discount on something they'll be buying anyway is a great setup, and publishers get a little extra cash and the ability to sell future DLC on launch day – the single biggest day for DLC purchases.

The Newest 'Far Cry 3' Trailer is About as NSFW as it Gets

Mon Jun 04, 2012 at 08:30 PM ET
Tags: Far Cry, Far Cry 3, Ubisoft (all tags)

Nudity, foul language, murder and shooting tigers in the face – Ubisoft isn't afraid to earn the M on the cover of their game.

We've seen bits and pieces of 'Far Cry 3' before, but the latest trailer from Ubisoft takes things to a whole new level. The game looks to be a wonderful sort of crazy murder spree with psychedelic elements and some really intense fights. For example, in one segment you can shoot a tiger out of a cage so that it will kill its captors, and then when the tiger turns on you, you'll have to take it out.

The trailer is also decidedly not safe for work. It starts out with a writing nude woman – well technically she's wearing paint – and evolves into some very visceral violence while a seemingly infinite stream of f-bombs are dropped.

Ubisoft has gone a little bit nuts, and we dig it.

Ubisoft Reveals the 'Watch Dogs' - Possible Game of the Show at E3 2012

Mon Jun 04, 2012 at 08:00 PM ET
Tags: Ubisoft, Watch Dogs, E3 2012, Next-Gen Games, PlayStation 4, Xbox 720, PC (all tags)

It's too early to say yet, but this may be most exciting game of E3. It also might be our first look at a next-gen title.

The Ubisoft press conference could be described as painful, but only if you were to be really polite about it. The hosts were dreadful and the segment on eSports was so poorly done that, as much as we love our eSports, we just didn't want to watch.

Just when it seemed like all we'd see was a bit of 'Assassin's Creed 3,' Ubisoft surprised us all. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot came out to highlight a new IP – a brand new game without a 2 or a 3 behind it. The game is called 'Watch Dogs' and it may just be the game of the show.

It' s a bit hard to describe, but think GTA with futuristic hacking and incredible graphics. Check out the gameplay trailer to see it in action. Things start a little slow, but they build to a hectic and downright crazy climax. In the end, our hero hacks a traffic light to cause a car accident and then a gunfight ensues. It's pretty nuts.

One thing that has everyone scratching their heads is what system this game is coming out for. It looked too pretty for the 360 and PS3, and Ubisoft didn't specify what hardware it would be running on. We're guessing that this is the first game we've seen made for next-gen systems.

Unless Sony or Nintendo have something amazing up their sleeves, Ubisoft may be the ones dominating E3 talk this year.
