U-Verse Drops ESPN 3D Without Warning

The television provider cites high prices and a lack of interest.

If you own a 3D television you know that the available content is already pretty limited. You can pick up 3D Blu-rays, auto convert your 2D Blu-rays or enjoy some 3D television on one of the few existing 3D channels. If you're an AT&T U-Verse subscriber your choices just got a little more limited.

Just a few nights ago, right before the end of the X-Games 3D broadcast, AT&T pulled ESPN 3D from its lineup. There was no warning - the plug just got pulled. A statement released by AT&T states that they simply decided not to renew their contract. "The price tag for ESPN 3D was too high, especially considering the low demand we've seen from customers."

One interesting factor in all of this is that AT&T was the only provider that was charging a premium for just ESPN 3D. Customers that wanted access to 3D sports had to shell out $10 a month for the privilege.

It's official, Xbox 360 functionality is coming, as well as an unexpected phone app that sounds very promising.

AT&T finally gave us the official word on Xbox 360 set-top functionality today, as well as adding some info on Windows Phone 7 streaming.

The 360 functionality will allow you to watch live TV, play back recorded and On Demand content as well as utilize interactive apps all while still keeping your Xbox chat and messaging going. The downside is that this added feature isn't coming free, and you'll need an AT&T technician out to install it. New customers can get the kit for $99. If you're already a customer, you'll have to shell out $55 more for installation.

Also coming in November, the U-verse Mobile app will allow any Windows Phone 7 owner access to watch U-verse television right on their phone. If you're not a U-verse subscriber, you'll have to pay $9.99 a month for the service.

AT&T May Cut U-Verse Spending

If the FCC tightens regulation of internet companies, AT&T's CEO says the company may stop expanding the U-Verse service.

So, the whole net neutrality thing is happening. The FCC is going to be rolling out new regulations on internet providers that would prevent unfair practices in regards to charges, services, and practices. It's a pretty contentious issue, especially if you're the CEO of an internet provider.

"If this Title 2 regulation looks imminent, we have to re-evaluate whether we put shovels in the ground," says AT&T's Randall Stephenson. That's a bit of a threat from AT&T, saying that they'll stop expanding if the regulations hit.

That would mean that U-Verse internet would stop where it is now, and there would be no additional coverage. But it would mean that U-Verse TV and phone services stop expanding too, which could be detrimental for anyone living in a town with a single television provider.
