Streaming Super Bowl Sets Records for Viewers, but Drops the Ball in Quality

Lag, poor quality, and a lack of easy access made the stream an overall failure.

Good news first. Super Bowl XLVI, the first Super Bowl ever to be made streaming by the NFL, brought in 2.1 million unique viewers. That’s a huge number, and will certainly encourage more streaming events in the future.

Now the bad news. The stream was less than acceptable for many viewers. Video and audio quality were lacking, lag was bad for both the main stream and the alternate angles that really added appeal to the streaming idea.

One telling statistic is that the average viewer only watched for 39 minutes. That means for every person that watched the entire thing, there were several that tuned in and immediately tuned out. Certainly there were those that had no choice but to watch it streaming, but for everyone else the stream was a disappointment.

If you're signed up with Verizon you'll be able to get it on your phone too.

If you're going to be watching the Super Bowl, chances are you're going to be somewhere with a big TV, a killer sound system and plenty of beer, food and friends. But real life happens, and you might not be able to get out of work or other obligations. Or you may have cut your cable and lack an antenna for your set.

NBC is taking care of you this year. For the first time ever, the Super Bowl will be streamed live online. You'll be able to check it out on the NBC or NFL website - whichever you prefer. It should be interesting to see what happens with those incredibly expensive Super Bowl commercials, whether they're aired too or if net specific commercials are shown instead.

Verizon customers get it a little better than the rest of us with this Super Bowl. You'll be able to watch the action live on your Smartphone with the NFL Mobile app. No matter what you're doing on Super Bowl Sunday, you'll be able to tune into the game.

The Super Bowl – Most Watched TV Program Ever

Over a million viewers made the Super Bowl more watched than the M*A*S*H finale.

It’s official. This year’s Super Bowl has surpassed the 1983 series finale of M*A*S*H as the most watched television show of all time.

When looking at numbers from the box office, there’s always a bit of mental arithmetic involved. The increasing cost of movie tickets raises the dollar amounts taken in, so of course newer movies tend to do better than older movies.

Television ratings ring a bit more true. Sure, a few things can be factored in, such as the increased number of television sets in the US, but so can the multitude of channels that were unavailable back in 1983.

The record that was once held by the finale of M*A*S*H was a viewership of 105.97 million people. Neilson reports estimate that over 106.5 million people tuned in to watch the Saints take on the Colts.

Of particular interest, and not yet revealed, is the comparison between standard definition and high definition viewings of the game.
