'Old Republic' is Going Free-to-Play

Tue Jul 31, 2012 at 06:30 PM ET
Tags: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Free-to-Play, MMORPGs (all tags)

The Cartel Coin benefits of having and maintaining a subscription are a bit confusing at the moment, but it'll all clear up as the launch day approaches.

Just as all MMORPGs that aren't named 'World of Warcraft' do, 'Old Republic' is becoming a free-to-play game with a subscription option. As you might expect, playing for free means limited access to content, character creation options, travel, auctions and more. It also puts you on the "normal" list when you're logging in, instead of the "priority" list that subscribers get.

If you subscribe to the game you'll also get additional Cartel Coins – a new currency that will be provided to both free and subscription players on a monthly basis. If you're a current subscriber you'll get 150 per paid month prior to now and 200 for each paid month until the free-to-play launch. You'll also get 250 for playing at all in August and 1,000 for owning the Collector's edition. Confusing things just a bit more is that only some of these options are available for new players.

Those coins get you in-game rewards which look to be purely aesthetic at this point. We expect to hear more about those rewards as we edge closer to release

'Star Wars: The Old Republic' is Free This Weekend

Tue Mar 13, 2012 at 11:30 AM ET
Tags: Star Wars, Star Wars: The Old Republic, MMORPGs, Free Weekend (all tags)

If you haven't tried the game out yet, this is the perfect time to get in on the action.

The big problem with MMOs – and it's something you don't really find in other games – is that there's so much riding on you enjoying the game. If you pick up a crappy shooter, you're out the $60 but still have something to screw around with down the line, or sell if you bought a console copy. With an MMO you're out the upfront investment plus the money spent on a subscription, and if you want to play again down the line you have to pay for more game time.

It's a big barrier for people to get over but the folks at BioWare are giving you a chance to avoid all that. This weekend, starting on Thursday, 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' will be free to play. You can get in on the action as early as midnight on Thursday morning, central time.

Swing on over to the Weekend Pass page for some more details and, come Thursday, to download the game.

Witness the End of 'Star Wars Galaxies' From a Player's Point of View

Tags: MMORPGs, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Star Wars Galaxies, Star Wars (all tags)

Fan made videos capture the final moments of the game and pay tribute to the world they played in.

On December 15th, 'Star Wars Galaxies' shut down for good, another casualty in the MMO war. Whether you were a fan of the game or not, it's always a bit sad to see something ending for good. This holds true especially with MMOs, which are as much about the community as anything else.

Fans of the game have captured the final game moments in videos that span the range between silly , touching and everything in between. There's something to be said for a community that keeps on creating after the game they love is gone.

There are two videos that stand out in particular. The first is a tour of a player's in-game home. It's a place they put time and work into creating and - as of last Thursday - it's gone forever.

The second is an exploration of the 'Star Wars Galaxies' world on the final day set to some very sweet music. There's a lot going on in the video, but the part that's really striking is the ending. The player looks to the sky, watching the fireworks, and is then disconnected from the server for the last time.

Two Million Players Participate in 'Old Republic' Beta

Tue Dec 06, 2011 at 10:30 AM ET
Tags: Star Wars: The Old Republic, MMORPGs, BioWare, World of Warcraft (all tags)

It's looking like the 'Star Wars' MMO may stand a real shot in the marketplace.

When a new massively multiplayer game comes out, there tends to be media and fan buzz that we may finally see the "WoW killer." Whether or not BioWare's game can do that - if it's even possible to do - there's no question that 'Star Wars: the Old Republic' is an exciting prospect for gamers.

Thanksgiving weekend gave a good chunk of gamers access to the Beta version of 'Old Republic' in an effort to work out the kinks, check server capabilities and the like. According to EA, the game's Beta brought in two million players, with 750,000 playing last weekend.

Numbers like this could mean very good things for 'Old Republic' and give it some real sustainability. It may not be the 11 million that 'Warcraft' has, but converting those Beta testers into paying customers would be a big step towards a successful MMO.
