BlizzCon Cancelled This Year Due to "Jam Packed Schedule"

The convention will be back in 2013. Until then Blizzard is supplying us with the 2012 Battle.net Championship

Blizzard has a lot on its plate for the next year. ' StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm' is under development, the 'Warcraft' expansion 'Mists of Pandaria' is in the works and the long-awaited ' Diablo III' will be released. Add to that the rumored console version of 'Diablo III' and whatever the Blizzard's mystery project is as you've got what the Blizzard blog calls a "jam-packed schedule."

In place of BlizzCon, Blizzard has announced the Battle.net World Championship, which will feature the best of the best players in 'StarCraft II' and 'World of Warcraft.' It's a nice way to plug eSports, but an event that happens in Asia isn't exactly going to make up for the US based fan celebration.

With no BlizzCon 2012 to announce products through, this may simply mean that Blizzard has nothing exciting and new to reveal this year. It will certainly make BlizzCon 2013 a much more hotly anticipated event.

Major League Gaming Brings in 3.5 Million Unique Viewers - Dominates the 18-24 Demographic

Professional gaming is on its way up in the states, with up to 241,000 peak viewers for the MLG alone.

It's been a real uphill battle to get eSports growing in the states, but over the last few years things have been improving in a big way. The MLG championships on the weekend of November 18th drew in a whopping 241,000 concurrent viewers. MLG boasts a total of 3.5 million unique viewers across their competitions for this year.

A few hundred thousand may not seem like much, but even the biggest competitions held in the U.S. last year didn't break the 100,000 concurrent viewer mark - now in 2011 the MLG has gotten more than double.

Major League Gaming CEO Sundance DiGiovanni says that these viewership numbers are encouraging, especially in the all important young male demographic. "Our live streams of the Pro Circuit National Championships garnered more 18-24 male viewers than Comedy Central, MTV, TBS, and FX draw in an average quarter hour and nearly as many as Adult Swim," he says.

In 2011, MLG featured 'StarCraft II,' 'Halo: Reach,' 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' and 'League of Legends.' Nothing has been announced for 2012 yet, but you can expect things to kick off again in the spring.

'StarCraft II' is Half Off Directly Through Blizzard until Monday

Wed Nov 23, 2011 at 09:30 AM ET
Tags: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, Videogame Sales, Blizzard, StarCraft II (all tags)

The highly acclaimed real-time-strategy game is available for just $29 until the 28th.

Black Friday sales abound, but this one is particularly cool. It's a huge discount on 'StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty' that brings it from $59 down to $29. It's a significant markdown and it's even more significant because it's on a Blizzard game. They're a great company but they're not exactly known for marking down their prices. 'Warcraft III' is still $19 through their store, as is the expansion 'The Frozen Throne' and those games came out nearly a decade ago.

If you haven't played 'StarCraft II' and you have a computer that can handle it you should absolutely take advantage of this opportunity. The game received incredible reviews across the board and inspired an incredibly popular eSports scene to take off in America.

Of course, this is also a great opportunity to pick up a cheap Christmas presents for your friends. Whether you want to crush them with your 4-gate technique or you want to find a way for them to get interested in the GSL, you've got until Monday to pick it up. Oh, and you're limited to five, so you'll need to think of something different for the rest of the folks you know.
