All 2011 and 2012 LG Cinema 3D Smart TVs will be able to access the new source of 3D video.

The folks at LG have just announced a brand new service for their Smart TVs that should please fans of 3D content. It's called 3D World and it's a hub for 3D content that you can rent directly through your TV.

LG hasn't specified just what we can expect to see from 3D World, only that you'll be able to watch "high quality 3D content across numerous content categories such as entertainment, sports, documentary, kids, and lifestyle." They've also mentioned cooking shows, which could prove fairly interesting.

If you have a 2011 LG Cinema 3D Smart TV, you'll have to download the 3D World app. If you're the owner of a 2012 model, you can access it directly from the dashboard.

Samsung Announces its Free the TV Challenge Finalists

The second in the series of contests for app developers comes to a close at CES with three interesting applications competing for top honors.

Samsung knows that it isn't the hardware or the operating system that determines the success of a platform - it's the software. To spur on developers for Samsung's smart TVs the company launched a contest that rewards $100,000 to the best app. They were pretty happy with how it turned out in 2010 and the 2011 crop looks even better.

Three apps are competing for the top spot, the most practical of which is a music app called FRESHQ. Using a smartphone, tablet or the TV itself, you can stream music from your favorite artists and follow their various social media outlets at the same time.

Let's Play Stop is a game that pits players against each other with a goal of coming up with unique word corresponding to a particular letter. There are five different categories to keep things varied.

Party Shots is an interesting one that's definitely a niche app. Simply download Party Shots to your smartphone and take photos. Those pictures will then be put onto your TV as a part of a slide show. It may not be great for everyone's party but we could definitely see this one taking off in clubs and other commercial settings.

Samsung Teases "The Future of Smart TV" at CES 2012

They're saving the details for January, but they want you excited now. Get excited!

Samsung has something big planned for CES 2012 in January and they want folks to get excited. They've released a video to get people pumped and to hint at some of the things coming in the near future.

Samsung says that we can look forward to "the future of Smart TVs" which brings up so many possibilities. It could be a Samsung Google TV - one was rumored for CES 2011 after all. It could, of course, be some sort of proprietary hardware and software suite that has nothing to do with what's out there today.

Samsung says that there are a few hints in the video, but that nothing will be officially revealed. With just one or two viewings under our belts, all we saw of note was the final clip which showed tablet use to interact with the set - anything we missed?

Lenovo is Working on a Smart TV of Its Own

The company will be launching a set in early 2012.

When it comes to controlling an HTPC or compatible smart TV, Lenovo is a name that leaps to mind immediately. Their one handed remote is slick and constantly improving, making it high on the list for many.

It seems the company isn't content to just control other people's products anymore. Lenovo is now working on a smart TV that's set to release in early 2012. The TV will be internet connected and will likely turn into the rumored Lenovo Cloud.

As far as other details go, it's all fuzzy - or more accurately, nonexistent. We'll certainly hear more by the time CES rolls around. Until then it's hard to tell if this could be a real contender on the market or just a one-off that falls completely under everyone's radar.

LG, Sharp, and Philips Working on a Smart TV App Standard

The set makers have released a universal SDK that will play nice with TVs from all three companies.

Just as computers have two main operating systems, less powerful devices like TVs, smartphones and set-top boxes have the choice between Android and, well, Android. Of course, they could always make their own proprietary OS, but trying to attract developers to such a limited market is a hard sell.

That's why LG, Sharp, and Philips have decided to work together on a standard that would work across all their platforms. By sharing one standard, they'll have a much easier time wooing developers. After all, making an app for three brands is a lot more attractive than making one for a single brand.

"This cooperation is nothing less than a watershed in the brief history of Smart TVs," says LG president Havis Kwon. "By working in partnership with two innovators in TVs, we've taken a major step towards creating an app market every bit as inventive and dynamic as the one that exists for smartphones."

Panasonic Reveals Its New Smart TV Processor

The dual core chip is the fastest to be put into a TV yet.

Panasonic is making some big strides when it comes to smart TVs, including the development of the world's fastest TV specific processor, which will start shipping out to manufacturers later this month.

The new Cortex A-9 chip boasts a dual-core 1.4GHz processor, a nice step up over the 1.2GHz found in Google TV devices. All that speed should allow for a consistently smooth user experience, assuming that the user interface is well designed of course.

Panasonic says that the new chip will assist with new functionalities, like being able to watch two shows simultaneously, or streaming content and apps at the same time. It also keeps power consumption nice and low - around 40 percent lower than previous Panasonic chips.

Emerging Countries Will Drive Connected TV Adoption

Tue Apr 26, 2011 at 12:00 PM ET

Newer markets will help connected set adoption to grow significantly.

Internet connectivity is in high demand here in the US, but according to new research by DisplaySearch, less developed countries may be driving sales in the near future. "The connected TV market is developing beyond mature regions like Western Europe and Japan," says DisplaySearch electronics director Paul Gray.

Part of the reason for the expected growth is the impressive broadband structure established in Eastern European countries. In fact, DisplaySearch believes that Eastern Europe will go from 2.5 million connected sets sold in 2010 to 10 million in 2014.

Another interesting point brought up by the reasearch is that smart TVs and basic connected sets appeal to different markets. Those used to thinking of a TV in the traditional sense tend to prefer the basic features, while those that want a more interactive experience can get it from smart TVs.
