Panasonic Prepping to Take Ownership of Sanyo

Panasonic plans to take full control of Sanyo by next March.

When one major electronics company buys another major electronics company, things tend to take a while. We first got wind of this Panasonic buyout of Sanyo last December and things have been generally quiet until today.

Panasonic has now raised its ownership of Sanyo from 50 percent to 80 percent, edging ever closer to 100 percent ownership. Panasonic Corp. is also buying out Panasonic Electric and has raised its stake from 51 percent to 84 percent.

All these acquisitions don't come cheap – the folks at Panasonic shelled out more than $9.8 billion to make it happen. There's a lot on the line though, including Sharp's lithium-ion battery technology that Panasonic is banking on to make the deal worth their while.

The Z4000 boasts up to 216 billion color combinations and releases at the end of next month.

The PLV-Z4000 is the latest projector to come out of Sanyo, and it offers just about everything you'd expect from a current high definition projector.

To start with, it can handle video at a 1080p resolution, and at either 120 or 24 frames per second. It's a 3LCD projector, and thanks to its ability to double the input frame rate, Sanyo says it's able to virtually eliminate motion blur and artifacts.

It uses the TopazReal HD system, a technology exclusive to Sanyo that the company says guarantees excellent optical performance. It uses 14-Bit signal processing and a new, highly efficient HD lens. It's also got a color management system that's capable of producing up to 216 billion different color combinations.

"The high performance achieved by our TopazReal technology makes this projector an extraordinary value in today's home theater projector market," says Sanyo VP Sam Malik. "The PLV-Z4000's ability to display very high resolution artifact-free images with superb color accuracy, while being easy to install in any home theater environment, make it a great choice from the standpoint of both consumers and installers."

You'll be able to pick up the PLV-Z4000 at the end of May for an MSRP of $2,495.

Sanyo Sold to Panasonic for $4.6 Billion

We’ve been expecting this one for a while now, but it’s finally official. Panasonic has picked up Sanyo for over four and a half billion dollars.

Company acquisitions seem to come in threes. First Comcast picked up NBC Universal, then Kodak’s OLED business was purchased by LG. The announcement that Panasonic has picked up Sanyo isn’t a surprise, but it does mark the third huge sale in the span of just over a week.

Panasonic has talked at great length about their plans for the company, which specializes in batteries and solar energy. The first and most intriguing project mentioned is that of a home monitoring station for energy expenditure.

By using the station, homeowners will be able to closely monitor their energy use right on their televisions. This would presumably include the amount of energy being used by Panasonic’s own plasma TVs.

Panasonic recently announced a green initiative which, according to a company representative, will not affect the production of plasma displays. Though plasmas are heavily targeted as being inefficient with energy, Panasonic has no desire to give up a business in which they hold a great deal of market share.
