Samsung Nearly Doubles Profits in Third Quarter of 2012

TV and home theater products accounted for a chunk, but the real savior for Samsung was mobile.

The folks at Samsung have been having a great year, much unlike the rest of the home theater and consumer electronics industry. Where companies like Sharp and Sony continue to falter, Samsung is thriving.

A good chunk of the increased profits for the third quarter of the year come from their smartphones and tablets, which increased sales by 41 percent over last year's number. In all, the mobile and IT division was up 132 percent in profits as well as 82 percent in revenue.

Despite other companies losing sales in TVs, Samsung is growing there. The 19 percent increase in sales is a bit more modest than the mobile numbers, but it's still a significant jump. With the holidays coming up, Samsung is expecting to boost those sales numbers even more.

Sales of Soundbars Double in 2011

Bundled deals and a reanalysis of marketing targets have helped things along.

We haven't heard too much in the way of new soundbars recently, but as it turns out, that doesn't mean the speaker style is waning. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

Analysts at Futuresource say that soundbar sales doubled in 2011, thanks in part to heavy promotion and bundled deals with TVs. A change in the target audience of soundbars has helped as well. Originally, soundbar makers were going after high-end users without room for full speaker systems, but now they're aiming at the folks who wouldn't buy a 5.1 setup but still want better sound.

LED Sales Outshine CCFL in Last Quarter of 2011

LED backlit sets had a huge jump at the end of this year, eclipsing fluorescent backlighting for the first time.

Practically from the beginning, home theater buffs saw LED backlit TVs as the only real choice when buying a new set. They provide better backlighting, allow for darker blacks and, as an added bonus, are more energy efficient.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, the mass consumer base caught up. While LED backlit sets only made up 22% of purchases in the third quarter of the year, they came in at 54%. That’s over double the market share, and during the holidays too, when sales are at their highest.

That’s not to say that customers went into stores looking for an LED backlit set. Plenty were planning on a standard CCFL set but ended up changing their minds. In fact, 81% of people who went in with a CCFL in mind ended up going with LED backlighting instead.

Panasonic Will Restructure in Wake of $9.2 Billion Quarterly Loss

Part of the loss is fallout from this year's earthquake in Japan, but steep sales decreases caused the rest.

Panasonic may make some impressive TVs but there's one thing they're not making - a profit. The company is down $9.2 billion in the last business quarter, though there are some factors that make that number seem bigger than it is.

One of those factors is the Great East Japan Earthquake, which affected Panasonic and essentially all other manufacturers located in Japan. On top of that, the flooding in Thailand hurt not only the global economy but Panasonic plants as well.

Of course, these tragedies can't account for all of Panasonic's losses this quarter. Sales in all sunk by 14%. The component of Panasonic that takes care of TVs lost 16% in sales due to declines in flat panels and mobile phones. The decrease would have been higher were it not for favorable PC sales.

2011 Was a Record Setting Year for Projectors

Nearly 10 million projectors shipped last year, with strong gains in both the US and Canada

2011 was a good year for home theater projectors. Nearly 10 million were shipped and a good chunk of that came from "New Era" projectors - those below 500 lumens.

In 2010, 1.1 million of these New Era projectors shipped out - not a bad number, but small compared to the 1.8 million that hit shelves in 2011. Ultra-short throw and interactive projectors also increased by nearly 50% thanks to growth in the US and Western Europe.

High-end projectors outperformed the mainstream market - nothing surprising there. Digital cinema projectors hit 30,000 shipped in the fourth quarter of 2011, which brought the total for the year to 70,000.

Mainstream projectors, meanwhile, did fine overseas. France, Spain and Russia were among the leading buyers in this category.

Samsung Pulls in $4.7 Billion Profit in 2011

That’s $1.8 billion more than 2010.

It’s no secret that Samsung’s been doing well, but as it turns out, the company is on a steep incline. They pulled in $42 billion in sales, $4.7 of which was pure profit. That’s a huge step over last year when they brought in $2.9 billion in profit.

Leading the charge was the cell phone division. Over 300 million phones were sold for a whopping $2.3 billion profit. The semiconductor business was no slouch either, bringing in $2 billion in profit. That’s $4.3 between the two, leaving TVs to make up much of the remainder.

Samsung’s LED sets boosted the company’s sales considerably and helped the division to increase numbers by 20 percent. They boasted $7.6 million in sales in 2011.

Retail Gaming Sales Drop 21% in December

Tags: Sales Figures, Industry Trends (all tags)

Stores pulled in a billion dollars less than they did last year. Hardware and accessories were hit the worst.

The final months of the year are traditionally big ones for the game industry, with billions of dollars being thrown around on systems, controllers, games and more. The last month of 2011 didn't do quite so well.

Game retailers sold $3.99 billion worth of gaming goods in December of 2011. It's a lot of course, but it's a major step down from the $5.07 billion they sold in December of 2010. Sales were down across the board, but it was hardware that really suffered.

Console sales went down 28% last month while accessories took a similar 27% dive. There's only one new system on the market in the US though, and it makes sense that five year old consoles won't sell as well as they did at launch. Games did better, only dropping off 14%, but that's still a tremendous loss.
