Sears and Kmart Enter the Streaming Video Market
Fri Jun 25, 2010 at 12:00 PM ETTags: RoxioNow, Kmart, Sears (all tags)
They'll be using the same RoxioNow platform as Best Buy and Blockbuster.
Apparently the word has gotten around about streaming video. The head honchos are hearing about it and they want it. Conveniently enough, Sonic Solutions is there to give it to them.
Starting this holiday season, Sears and Kmart (who is owned by Sears) will be selling Blu-ray players and other devices that have a new streaming service baked right in. The new service, named Alphaline Entertainment, uses the RoxioNow platform.
This all comes with a bit of a twist though. Apparently Sears and Kmart employees will be setting up the service in the store and walking customers through the process at no additional cost. That way, people are able to go home, plug their TVs in and enjoy.

Sonic is Bringing DTS 5.1 to RoxioNow
Mon Jun 14, 2010 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Sonic, RoxioNow, Best Buy, Blockbuster (all tags)
Both Blockbuster and Best Buy's services will see the benefit.
Now that we've got the basics of internet delivery down, it's time to do some upgrading, and that's exactly what Sonic's doing. If the name's not familiar, they're the people behind CinemaNow, now known as RoxioNow, the service that both Best Buy and Blockbuster use for online video sales and rentals.
Later this year, Sonic will be enabling DTS 5.1 sound on their service, allowing customers to take advantage of their home theater systems. From the sound of things, that'll be right around the same time that Netflix will be debuting 5.1 on for its customers.
5.1 channel audio is a great step, but there's been no information from Sonic about how this will affect the size of video files. If adding 5.1 slows downloads too much, it may be a problem for some customers.

Digital Delivery of 3-D Coming Soon to RoxioNow
Tue May 04, 2010 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Sonic Solutions, 3D, Industry Trends, RoxioNow (all tags)
Sonic Solutions has just announced a program to fully support what they're calling the next big thing in home video.
Sonic Solutions launched their new "Total 3-D" initiative today, designed to make them a leader in 3-D video.
To start with, Sonic Solutions has been working to develop new 3-D disc authoring technologies. They'll be behind a lot of the Blu-rays that you see hitting shelves, in one way or another. But it's the consumer side that's really interesting.
Sonic says that the RoxioNow service (formerly CinemaNow) is primed and ready to start delivering 3-D content. It's already powering 3-D displays in storefronts, all Sonic is waiting for now is the consumer content.
There's also Video Lab 3D, which allows users to turn their 3-D content into standard DVDs for playback on compatible devices.
"Our 'Total 3D' initiative is the next step in our Hollywood-to-Home strategy," says Sonic's Mark Ely. "The expertise we gain on the professional side allows us to engineer better consumer products with higher performance and broader compatibility."
