Epson Launches Moverio 3D Video Glasses
Tue Apr 03, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Personal Media Viewers, Epson, Android (all tags)
In addition to the ability to play back video files, they pack Flash 11 Support so you can stream content as well.
The Epson Moverio BT-100 wearable video display boasts the ability to show you content on a virtual 80 inch screen, including side-by-side 3D, and it's the first of these personal media devices to be based on the Android platform.
The Moverio plays back digital video files that can be stored on the 1GB of internal storage or included 4GB microSDHC card – you can expand that to 32GB – but Epson doesn't list what video files are supported by the device. Thanks to Flash 11 support though, you'll find it compatible with a great deal of video streaming websites. It's unclear from the press release whether the Silverlight based Netflix is supported or not.
Epson's personal media device handles 2D as well as 3D content and Dolby Mobile Surround helps to provide the best sound possible.
The Moverio BT-100 is available for preorder on Amazon at a price of $699. The display will be released on April 6th.

Sensics Will Launch 3D "SmartGoogles" for Movies and Games
Mon Jan 09, 2012 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Personal Media Viewers, 3D, Virtual Reality, Industry Trends (all tags)
The head tracking goggles work with game systems, phones, tablets, and PCs, and uses augmented reality that allows you to control the system by hand.
3D is still the big push from within the home theater industry, which means that the release of niche products and untested ideas is inevitable. The latest is something called Smart Goggles, created by Sensics.
SmartGoggles is a 3D headset with a sort of 'Tron' aesthetic that promises a completely immersive 3D experience. Like other 3D personal media viewers, SmartGoggles allows the user to enjoy 3D wherever they please instead of having to sit in front of a TV.
The thing that separates SmartGoggles from the rest of the pack is its ability to interact with your devices. If you hook it up to a game system, you can use the glasses for head tracking and look in 360 degrees just by moving your head. You can also use it for augmented reality applications - the same way SmartGoggles menus are controlled.
There's been no information yet on what kind of screen resolution or audio quality we'll get out of SmartGoggles, nor any details on pricing.

SiliconMicroDisplay Announces a 3D Personal Media Viewer
Wed Nov 02, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Personal Media Viewers, 3D (all tags)
Unlike most media viewers, you'll be able to see through the image and not lose track of your surroundings.
Let's set the scene. You're on a long flight across the country and you get the urge to watch a 3D movie. Well simply get out your personal media viewer and you can kick back and relax. But wait, what happens when the stewardess comes to pass out drinks? You can't possibly count on the person next to you - you're in a war for the armrest after all.
The ST1080 solves this problem by giving you vision of what's going on around you. It's the first ever see-through head mounted display on the market for consumer use. That means you can watch a movie while not losing touch with the outside world. It's not clear whether this can be turned on or off though - there are times where shutting yourself off completely is exactly what you wan to do.
SiliconMicroDisplay says that its new ST1080 is not only higher resolution than competitors - each eye sees 1080p - but also that the price will be much more affordable than others on the market. They haven't announced a price yet, but launch is expected next month.

Sony's Personal 3D Viewer Out in UK - US Release Tomorrow!
Tue Oct 25, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Sony, Personal Media Viewers, HMZ-T1 (all tags)
If you're looking for a 3D experience that you don't have to share, the HMZ-T1 is the way to go.
Despite the flaws present in a personal media viewer - tiny sweet spot for viewing, discomfort or incompatibility with glasses, looking like a tool - the idea of being able to lay back and enjoy a 3D movie with 5.1 surround without anyone else bothering you is pretty slick.
Sony boasts an immersive experience that's like "you're sitting 12 feet away from a 150 inch screen" just like being in "your very own movie theater." It offers a pair of OLED displays and, of course, you don't need to put on any additional glasses for the 3D experience.
Sony's 3D personal media veiwer, the HMZ-T1, is available in the UK now and will be hitting the states on Wednesday the 26th. You can preorder it directly from Sony or pick it up on Amazon. Either way, you're going to be shelling out $800.

Vuzix Introduces New "Virtual Reality" Personal Media Glasses
Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Personal Media Viewers, Virtual Reality (all tags)
They offer a 16:9 resolution, head tracking capabilities and 3D video.
Sick of giant TV screens and nice crisp monitors that don't require any sort of accessories to enjoy? Well Vuzix has the perfect setup for you. The new Wrap 1200VR glasses provide a 16:9 screen right in front of your eyes.
If you're the 3D kind of person, you'll be happy to know that that's entirely possible with the Wrap 1200VR. There's no apparent requirement when it comes to video cards and Vuzix says you can use them with the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well, so you should be good to go no matter what you hook up to.
The 1200VR also handles head tracking, which is actually pretty boss. Since you've got them on your head anyway, head tracking makes a lot more sense than it does with traditional monitors. Not all games are compatible, of course.
If you're thinking that this sounds like a pretty sweet setup, you may reconsider when you hop on Amazon and see the $600 price tag.

Sony Will Launch a Personal 3D Visor for Japan in November
Thu Sep 01, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: 3D, Personal Media Viewers, HMZ-T1, Sony (all tags)
So, if you want to wear a crazy big thing on your head to watch 3D movies that no one else can see, you have that option.
Personal media viewers are just plain odd. In theory they're really cool. They let you watch a movie simply by donning a pair of glasses. It gives you a full immersive experience and allows you to zone out when on a plane or riding in a car.
In reality they're kind of hinky. The video doesn't look that great and they don't work at all if you wear glasses. Of course, that's not stopping Sony from going all out.
The new HMZ-T1 is a personal media device that handles 3D as well as 2D content. Sony says it's like watching a 750-inch screen at a distance of 20 meters and that their Dual-Panel OLEDs provide a bright and crosstalk-free 3D picture.
It's an interesting product, but it's hard to tell whether it's going to pan out any better than the rest of the media viewers on the market. It's going to run just under $800 when it launches in Japan this November.
