'The First Beautiful Thing' Announced for Blu-ray
Fri Apr 20, 2012 at 01:00 PM ETTags: Disc Announcements, Palisades Tartan (all tags)
The 2010 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film is planned for Blu-ray in May.
In an early announcement to retailers, Palisades Tartan is bringing the Italian dramedy 'The First Beautiful Thing' to Blu-ray on May 22.
'The First Beautiful Thing' was nominated for an impressive 18 David di Donatello Awards (Italy's Academy Awards) and won for Best Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Actor. Director Paolo Virzi was also shortlisted for Best European Director by The European Film Academy last year. Virzi first made a name for himself with his debut feature, 'La Bella Vita,' where he won the David di Donatello and Silver Ribbon awards for best new director. His penultimate feature film, 'Tutta La Vita Davanti,' won two Silver Ribbons (Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress, Sabrina Ferilli).
Italian cinema caused a sensation in the United States over a decade ago when Roberto Benigni won three Oscars for 'Life Is Beautiful.' The commedia enjoyed terrific critical and commercial success and Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema said ''This is an honor for Italian cinema and culture.” Virzi directed Benigni in Caterina In 'The Big City' (2003).
With a strong ensemble cast of Italian cinema heavyweights including Micaela Ramazzotti ('Tutta La Vita Davanti'), Stefania Sandrelli (Stealing Beauty, The Last Kiss, Jamon, Jamon), and Valerio Mastandrea (Nine, Tutta La Vita Davanti), Virzi is able to weave together a compassionate and touching narrative that makes 'The First Beautiful Thing' stand out among other films in the New Italian Cinema movement.
The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and there doesn't appear to be any supplements.
Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $29.98.

The acclaimed character-driven drama coming to Blu-ray in April is now up for pre-order.
In an early announcement to retailers, Palisades Tartan is bringing 'Some Days Are Better Than Others' to Blu-ray on April 24.
Director Matt McCormick’s work crosses mediums and defies genre distinctions to fashion witty, abstract observations of contemporary culture and the urban landscape. McCormick has received awards including Best Short Film from the San Francisco International Film Fest, Best Experimental from the New York Underground Film Fest and Best Short from the Ann Arbor Film Fest. His film 'The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal' was named in the “Top 10 / Best of 2002” lists of both The Village Voice and Art Forum magazine. 'Some Days Are Better Than Others had its world premiere at SXSW 2010 and was featured at MoMA’s New Directors/New Films 2011.

As comedic duo ThunderAnt, she has performed alongside Fred Armisen (“Saturday Night Live”) as a lead actor in IFC’s hit comedy show, “Portlandia” (now in its second season). Brownstein previously acted in the 2002 psychological adventure film Group and performed as herself on the Emmy®-nominated show “The L Word.” Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Believer, Pitchfork, as well as numerous book anthologies on music and culture. James Mercer (Eli) is an actor/musician best known for his role as the front man of the platinum-selling recording artists The Shins, who are currently releasing a new album. Mercer has also composed original scores for film, including 2004’s 'Towlines' and that same year’s 'American Nutria,' and his music was featured in the 2004 hit film 'Garden State,' as well as in hit TV shows “The Sopranos,” “Gilmore Girls” and “Saturday Night Live.”

Palisades Tartan Devastated by London Riots
Thu Aug 18, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Palisades Tartan (all tags)
The fires started by rioters have destroyed as many as a quarter of a million discs.
"All of our inventory is gone, just gone. And we don’t know what we’re going to do next," says Palisades Tartan CEO Soumya Sriraman. "We’re not sure when we’re going to be back up."
While Palisades Tartan may not be a household name, it should ring a bell to fans of horror or Asian movies. Tartan Asian Extreme has put out films like 'Audition,' 'The Eye,' and the 'Vengeance Trilogy' including the much loved 'Oldboy.' Tartan Terror, meanwhile, has distributed 'House of 1,000 Corpses' and the Dario Argento version of 'The Phantom of the Opera.'
The company isn't going to be in good shape anytime soon according to Sriraman. "We’re going to lose sales every week, no matter what, and all we can do is keep our head down and deal with it."
