"PlayStation Network" Becomes "Sony Entertainment Network" on Wednesday

The name change is happening across the spectrum, with the exception of the PSP.

Tuesday the 7th is the last time you'll be logging onto PSN unless you own a PlayStation Portable. On Sony's other devices, the PlayStation Network name is being replaced with Sony Entertainment Network.

The name change is purely cosmetic and comes because Sony wants to keep its brand identity together across all devices - a feat that's difficult to pull off. They want Bravia users, PS3 users and Sony Blu-ray player users to have access to the same one-stop-shop service.

"Changing the name 'PlayStation Network account' to 'Sony Entertainment Network account' helps clarify the unity between PSN and other Sony Entertainment Network services," says a Sony spokesperson.

PSN Down Today - "Most Online Play" Unaffected

Sony has taken down the network for routine maintenance , closing the store, account management and more.

If you've tried to buy anything new on PSN today, you'll have noticed that it's not working. The PlayStation Network is down for the time being, thanks to some routine maintenance being carried out by Sony.

The company says that we can expect PSN to be down until midnight PST. During this maintenance, you'll be unable to access the PlayStation Store, account management and registration services and access to HomeMusic.

"Fortunately, most online play will be unaffected," writes Patrick Seybold on the PlayStation blog. "Users who are already signed into their account on PlayStation Network before the start of the maintenance should be able to stay signed in to their online session, but will not be able to access any of the services listed above."

If you collect in-game trophies during the maintenance, they'll be updated to reflect accordingly as soon as PSN is back up and running.

Sony Unveils Five New Blu-ray Player DVRs

Able to convert to PSP format impossibly fast.

A quintet of Blu-ray DVRs was released by Sony last week, just on the heels of a similar product offering from Mitsubishi. The DVRs range from the fairly unimpressive BDZ-RS10, sporting a single digital tuner and 320GB hard drive, to the BDZ-RX100 which has two digital tuners, a full terabyte of hard drive space and PSP support.

Blu-ray DVRs aren’t surprising coming from Sony, but what might be most interesting is the capability of many of these DVRs to convert video into a PSP compliant format. According to Akihabara News, the new PSP compatible DVRs are capable of converting an hour's worth of video in less than two minutes, an impressive speed for a fairly niche feature.
