LG’s 15” OLED For Sale In Korea This November

Consumer electronics company LG announced plans to sell their 15” OLED TVs as early as this November in Korea.

The largest OLED released by any company thus far, LG will be showing the display at Berlin’s IFA and selling it just a month after.

Pricing has not yet been announced for the sure to be in demand OLEDs, and estimates range greatly. LG’s new displays will be offered solely in Korea initially, moving to a broader overseas market starting next year.

An unnamed LG executive also stated that the company will be unveiling a 40” model in the “not too distant future.” If LG can get its OLED’s out at a consumer friendly price before the competition, it could mean big things for the company.

New Production Method Could Make OLEDs Cheaper Than Newspapers

Using a new double solvent approach, researchers from the RIKEN Center for Intellectual Property Strategies are able to create a better and less expensive OLED screen. Rather than using spin coated films as before, the dual-solvent concept makes electrospray-deposited films smoother than before.

What does this all mean? The folks over at Riken Research have all the technical details, but simply put it means that OLED production could soon become quicker, better, and cheaper. According to researcher Yutaka Yamagata, this method could change the future of OLED production significantly. “Using this technology these devices could be manufactured as inexpensively as printing newspapers.”
