Amazon Prime Expands With the Help of NBC Universal

A new deal with NBC brings 1,000 more movies and TV shows to the service.

Amazon has been doing something incredibly interesting when it comes to their instant streaming service. For starters, Prime Video is free for Amazon Prime members - it's not a separate subscription service.

Initially it didn't seem like a big deal, but the company has been working to expand the service and has now added over 1,000 movies and TV shows thanks to a deal with NBC Universal. 9,000 total titles isn't going to get Netflix scared, but this new content acquisition will certainly make the streaming giant look twice.

Amazon also signed a deal with CBS recently for new content that added around 2,000 new television episodes, bringing the total to 2,000 movies and 7,000 television episodes. That's around a tenth of what Amazon's on demand service has to offer, but it's an impressive start - especially for a service that many people are getting as an added bonus.

The new arrangement includes next day airings of 'Saturday Night Live' and prior seasons of several previously unavailable shows.

It's been a big week for the folks at Netflix. They introduced streaming-only subscriptions in Canada, hinted at a similar service in the states and now have made a deal with NBC that will open up whole new avenues of content.

For starters, Netflix will be able to stream episodes of 'Saturday Night Live' the day after they air. It's a pretty big step forward and also includes hundreds of past 'SNL' episodes. Also a part of the deal, Netflix will be streaming all episodes from the past season of shows like '30 Rock,' 'Law & Order: SVU,' and 'The Office.'

Also up for streaming next week – 75 episodes of 'Battlestar Galactica' and the entire catalog of past seasons of 'Monk' and 'Psych.'

Potential Comcast/NBC Universal Deal May Change Market Cycle

With Comcast rumored to make a majority-share acquisition of NBC Universal, we may soon be seeing Video On Demand presence of new movies before a DVD or Blu-ray release.

The deal seems likely, and reports state that if it were to take place, Comcast and NBC would form a new media group, encompassing Universal Pictures, Universal Studios, NBC television, Hulu.com and cable channels such as Bravo, E!, and USA.

Michael Nathanson, analyst with Sanford Bernstein, says that Comcast could easily use its clout to move high definition Video On Demand availability up to precede physical media releases. “Charge consumers $7 to $10 per title for the exclusive right to watch a film in HD on their couches without having to drive to Blockbuster or a Redbox kiosk” he states, “No doubt, Warner Bros., and maybe Fox, will follow.”

Nathanson suspects that this would be an excellent way to offset the dollar-a-night rentals offered by Redbox. Allowing consumers early access in high definition at an appropriate price could make DVD rental obsolete for many users.
