Fox Asks, 'Dude, Where's My Car?' Answer: On Blu-ray

Pulling another timeless classic out of their back catalog, MGM has issued a late-August retail date for the hit comedy 'Dude, Where's My Car?'

Starring Seann William Scott and Ashton Kutcher (in the role that made him a big-screen draw), 'Dude, Where's My Car?' will make its mega-anticipated (by who, we don't know) Blu-ray bow on August 26. (The title appears timed to coincide with the next-gen release of another recent Kutcher hit, 'What Happens in Vegas,' which Fox will also release on the same date.)

Tech specs for 'Dude' include 1080p video and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround.

There are no supplemental details as of yet, but the press release is due any day, so, like, watch this space.

Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray has been set at $39.98.

You'll find preliminary specs for 'Dude, Where's My Car?' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under August 26.

Six Classic Bond Titles To Hit Blu-ray this October

Wed Jun 18, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET
Tags: Disc Announcements, MGM, Fox, James Bond (all tags)

MGM/Fox today officially announced the first next-gen release of a half-dozen James Bond catalog titles, which will hit Blu-ray this October in newly-remastered special editions.

Spanning several Bond eras (and lead actors), the six titles due to hit Blu-ray on October 21 (day-and-date with new DVD re-issues) include: 'Dr. No,' 'From Russia with Love,' 'Thunderball,' 'Live and Let Die,' 'For Your Eyes Only,' and 'Die Another Day.'

Timed to coincide with the upcoming theatrical release of the latest Bond film, 'Quantum of Solace,' each of the six titles will receive a frame-by-frame digital restoration courtesy of Lowry Digital Images (the same company behind the recent well-received remasters of 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones'), as well as a bevy of still-unnamed supplemental features.

"With 'Quantum of Solace' on the horizon, Bond fever is building once again," said Eric Doctorow, General Manager Worldwide, MGM Home Entertainment, via press release. "There is no better time to re-introduce these beloved films featuring the best picture and sound quality available today to the 60 million-plus, HD-capable households worldwide."

MGM/Fox has yet to release any additional specs or bonus features on the six Bond titles, but says full details will be revealed over the coming weeks.

Needless to say, we'll keep you posted as soon as more information comes to us.

In the meantime, you'll find preliminary specs for all six James Bond titles linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where they're indexed under October 21.

Rumor Mill: MGM Readying Bond Titles For Blu-ray Release? (UPDATED)

Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:55 PM ET
Tags: James Bond, MGM (all tags)
UPDATE: (6/05/08, 1:30pm ET) According to late word from Fox France, 'Goldeneye' and 'Tomorrow Never Dies' will not be among their first six Bond BD releases. Instead, they've been replaced by 'From Russia with Love' and 'For Your Eyes Only.' We've updated the titles listed in the post below accordingly.

The French release of six Bond flicks on Blu-ray this November has hopes high that the same films may find their way to US store shelves before Christmas.

The French website filmsactu.com is reporting today that MGM (via its parent distributor Fox) will release a half-dozen Bond titles on Blu-ray in France on November 5, 2008. The six flicks are reported to be 'Dr No,' 'Thunderball,' 'Live or Let Die,' 'From Russia With Love,' 'Die Another Day' and 'For Your Eyes Only.'

As for the fourteen other unreleased Bond titles ('Casino Royale' is the only 007 flick currently available on Blu-ray), rumor has it that they're planned for release concurrent with the BD release of 'Quantum of Solace,' sometime in the first half of 2009.

Though the French release of these titles doesn't necessarily mean they will also hit shelves stateside, generally Fox/MGM's release of such tentpole titles in France happens concurrently with (or is preceded by) a US release, heightening expectations that a US announcement could be on its way.

We should stress that with no official word from Fox or MGM stateside, all discussion of a US release of the Bond catalogue is purely speculative at this point. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted when and if any official information comes in. Stay tuned...

Tags: Disc Announcements, TV on High-Def, MGM (all tags)

MGM has officially announced a July debut for their first-ever TV-on-Blu-ray release, the original full-length telefilm 'Stargate: Continuum.'

Continuing the legacy of the long-running sci-fi series 'Stargate SG-1,' 'Continuum' sees members of the SG-1 embarking on a stand-alone action-adventure where history itself has been dramatically altered, and features returning cast members Richard Dean Anderson, Claudia Black, and Beau Bridges.

MGM will debut 'Stargate: Continuum' on July 29, day-and-date with the standard DVD release.

Tech specs for the Blu-ray boast 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, English DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround audio, and additional French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and subtitle options.

Extras shared between both versions include audio commentary with executive producer/writer Brad Wright and director Martin Wood, and a suite of three featurettes ("The Making of Stargate: Continuum," "Stargate Goes to the Arctic," "The Layman's Guide to Time Travel").

Fox has set a suggested retail price of $39.98 for the Blu-ray.

You'll find specs for 'Stargate: Continuum' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under July 29.

'Bridge Too Far,' 'Battle of Britain' Blu-rays Rescheduled for Father's Day

Tags: Street Date Changes, MGM, Fox (all tags)

After a delay of over six months, MGM has rescheduled the Blu-rays of 'Battle of Britain' and 'A Bridge Too Far' for early June.

Originally announced for a November high-def debut, MGM yanked both WWII-themed titles from their schedule, citing plans to re-schedule both as part of a planned Father's Day promotion.

Now MGM has made good on those plans, slotting in both 'Battle of Britain' and 'Bridge Too Far' for a June 3 Blu-ray launch. (Where they'll join three other recently-announced Fox/MGM war-themed titles, 'Patton,' 'The Sand Pebbles' and 'The Longest Day,' which are all due the same day.)

MGM has yet to issue tech specs or supplement details for either 'Battle of Britain' or 'Bridge Too Far,' but full details should arrive shortly. Watch this space.

Suggested retail for the Blu-rays has been set at $39.98 a pop.

You'll find the preliminary specs for 'The Battle of Britain' and 'A Bridge Too Far' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where they're indexed under their new street date of June 3.

MGM Yanks 'Ronin,' 'Red Dawn' Blu-ray Releases

Fri Nov 09, 2007 at 11:00 AM ET
Tags: Street Date Changes, MGM (all tags)

In what has become a major shuffling of its Q4 Blu-ray line-up, MGM has confirmed an indefinite delay for both 'Ronin' and 'Red Dawn.'

MGM had originally slotted 'Red Dawn' for a November 27 high-def debut, to be followed by 'Ronin' one weeks later on December 4. But now, citing only "marketing reasons," the studio has confirmed recent retailer reports that both titles had been pulled from the 2007 schedule, with no new dates in sight.

'Ronin' and 'Red Dawn' aren't the first Blu-ray titles to find themselves on MGM's Q4 chopping block. Just last week, the studio unceremoniously dumped the high-def debut of the war classics 'Battle of Britain' and 'A Bridge Too Far,' while back in October, it announced plans to shelve the horror chiller 'The Amityville Horror.'

That leaves only a single upcoming MGM Blu-ray title set for release in 2007 -- the recent Christian Bale action flick 'Rescue Dawn,' which the studio still has scheduled for November 20.

We'll keep you posted on any further updates to MGM's 2007 high-def slate, and in the meantime, we've moved both 'Ronin' and 'Red Dawn' to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned.

MGM Bumps 'Battle of Britain,' 'Bridge Too Far' Blu-ray Releases

Only days before their scheduled Blu-ray release, MGM has confirmed a delay for both 'Battle of Britain' and 'A Bridge Too Far.'

The two classic war flicks had been due to hit Blu-ray next Tuesday November 6, but today the studio confirmed earlier retailer reports that both titles had been yanked, citing "marketing decisions."

Though MGM has not yet announced new dates for either title, the studio did tell us that 'Battle of Britain' and 'Bridge Too Far' are now expected to arrive "sometime around Father's Day 2008," likely as a part of a holiday-themed promotion.

As always, we'll let you know as soon as new dates are announced for both titles.

In the meantime, we've moved both 'Battle of Britain' and 'Bridge Too Far' to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule. Stay tuned.

MGM Unveils Specs for 'Rescue Dawn' Blu-ray

Thu Oct 25, 2007 at 03:02 PM ET
Tags: Disc Announcements, Exclusive HD Content, MGM (all tags)

In a rare show of support for high-def supplemental content, MGM will bring 'Rescue Dawn' to Blu-ray this November as a fully-loaded, BD-Java enhanced special edition.

As we've previously reported, MGM first announced 'Rescue Dawn' for Blu-ray release last month, earmarking a November 20 street date (day-and-date with the standard DVD) but offering no hints at any supplemental features.

The studio has now unveiled full specs for the title, and in a welcome contrast to the vast majority of the studios earlier, bare-bones high-def releases, 'Rescue Dawn' will come packed with goodies.

Among the extensive supplements shared between the Blu-ray and standard-def DVD versions is audio commentary with director Werner Herzog, a five-part "The Making of a True Story" documentary, a trio of deleted scenes (with optional commentary), and a still gallery.

Exclusive to the Blu-ray will be five additional deleted scenes (also with optional commentary), a "Before the Dawn: Mission Secrets" subtitle trivia track, and a "Honoring the Brave" interactive memorial.

Tech specs for the BD-50 dual-ayer release include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track at 48kHz/24-bit.

Suggested retail price is $39.98, as previously announced.

You'll find final disc details for 'Rescue Dawn' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it is indexed under November 20.
