The Logitech Revue is Sold Out – New Remotes are on the Way

Logitech is getting back to doing what it does best.

The Revue, while an interesting idea and a risk that could have paid off big, wasn’t a winner for Logitech. The company had to drop the price shortly after release and has only just now sold out of Revue units. They’ve already announced that they’re getting out of the Google TV game and getting back to the usual Logitech business – remotes.

The company has revealed that several of its remotes will be getting a refresh in 2012. Among the new remotes will be a follow-up designed to replace the Harmony One. Logitech admits that they’re a little late getting around to making new remotes, so they’re hoping the launch will spur on sales.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see Logitech take such a large risk again in the near future since this one damaged them significantly.

Most Would Rather Have a TV Than a Couch in the Living Room

A new survey reveals some interesting statistics on the need for a TV, multitasking, and more.

A TV is essential for a proper living room as any home theater enthusiast will tell you, and it turns out that most people would agree. According to a survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of Logitech, 53 percent of tech-savvy folks think that a living room without a TV is worse than a living room without a couch. Bean bag chairs aren't a bad setup, but they're not going to impress company. Then again, that 60" plasma just might.

The survey also found that we are multitasking machines. Of all the folks between 18 and 44 interviewed, 95 percent reported doing an average of three other things while watching TV. Smartphones and social media almost certainly account for much of this.

Logitech will be updating its blog with more results in the near future.

Logitech CEO Says There Will be No Revue 2

He says the idea is great, but it's just not something that Logitech is going to pursue.

Let's just put it out there. The Logitech Revue was a complete flop. It was priced too high, the software didn't work right, and sales reflected the disappointing final product. After a significant price cut and an operating system update things may improve, but it's a bit too late for that.

Logitech's new CEO Guerrino De Luca says there's not going to be a followup to the Revue. The marketing push behind the box, the development costs and the lack of sales cost the company quite a bit of cash.

Interestingly, he says that the Google TV concept is right on the money and that it's going to find itself as a success eventually. That, or whatever comes after it. Still, he says that it's not the sort of thing that's in Logitech's future. In terms of peripherals and accessories though, Logitech will be right on board.

Logitech Harmony Link Makes your iPad or phone a Universal Remote

The highly customizable setup even allows for multiple user specific iPads.

There are a few devices out there that give you tablet and smartphone control. As cool as that is - and it really is pretty cool - controlling just one device in your home theater isn't enough.

Logitech is known for making some impressive universal remotes, but the Harmony Link takes things in a different direction. It turns your existing smartphone or iPad into a fully featured remote that uses gestures and on-screen menus to let you navigate with ease.

The menus and the navigation options are incredibly nice looking - check out the video - and are simple enough for even the family technophobe to handle. You can get a fully customized experience by using multiple iPads, but smartphones won't have that capability at launch.

The Logitech Harmony Link will launch in October for $99.

Logitech CEO Steps Down - Revue Price Drops to $99

Fri Jul 29, 2011 at 10:00 AM ET

The company says it's essential to "remove price as a barrier to broad consumer acceptance."

Remember back to last year before the Google TV launched? We were all so excited for the potential of the new product, and clearly the folks at Logitech were too. They put a lot of work into the set-top device and a lot of money too. Sadly, Google TV was a bomb.

As the result of an incredibly disappointing fourth quarter in 2010 and a similarly sad first quarter in 2011, Logitech CEO Gerald Quindlen has stepped down, leaving former CEO and current chairman Guerrino De Luca in charge. He'll be serving as CEO until the company can find a permanent replacement.

The first order of business for Logitech as it tries to turn itself around is getting more Revues out the door. They're doing that by taking a cool $150 off of the price, bringing the unit to a far more reasonable $99. It may still be a bit lacking in terms of functionality, but a $99 it's a lot easier to excuse some of the more minor flaws.

Logitech Ships a Skype Camera for Panasonic TVs

The $150 accessory will allow you to make video calls at 720p.

One of the features often touted by connected television manufacturers is the ability to make video calls using Skype. It's an interesting option, especially for families that want to chat with each other or couples in long distance relationships.

Logitech has just announced that their TV Cam for Skype is now shipping to stores. It's made specifically for Panasonic sets and allows you to send and receive video calls in 720p. You don't need a computer and you don't need to download any software - just plug it in and go.

"You shouldn't have to wait for the holidays, a special occasion or summer vacation to see distant friends and family," says Logitech VP Joerg Tewes. "We believe making a video call to loved ones should be easy and natural."

The Logitech TV Cam for Skype is shipping now and will be available in stores at a price of $150.

Logitech's Fourth Quarter Results Disappoint - Revue Price Drop Coming

Mon May 02, 2011 at 10:30 AM ET
Tags: Logitech, Google TV, Revue (all tags)

Logitech didn't do great this year, and poor sales of the Revue didn't help.

Things haven't been going well for Logitech. Despite creating their own Google TV device - a move that seemed like a surefire win - the company was unable to capitalize.

The Revue brought in just $5 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. That's down significantly from the $22 million in sales in the third quarter and nowhere near the $18 million that Logitech expected.

That doesn't mean they're backing away. If the Google TV platform is able to be revamped into a more attractive prospect for consumers, the Revue is still a solid device. They are dropping the price though, from $299 to $249.

Rumor: Logitech Temporarily Suspends Revue Production

Mon Dec 27, 2010 at 07:00 PM ET
Tags: Logitech, Google TV, Revue (all tags)

Like everyone who already bought one, they're waiting for an update to Google TV.

Google TV's launch was less than spectacular, especially considering all of the powerful companies that got behind it. It seemed so promising, but fell short of expectations. Google is working on an update that should make a big difference to customers, but until then it looks like Logitech is shutting things down.

In fact, according to DigiTimes, Logitech ordered a shutdown of Revue production earlier this month. The company was expecting around 500,000 units sold by the end of 2010, but if production has indeed shut down, it's clear that they're falling very short of that mark.

Since the Google TV update - originally expected to be launched in time for the Consumer Electronics Show in January - is now coming later, it's unclear what to expect from any of the companies involved.

Logitech Revue Just $179 for DISH Subscribers

That's not the only advantage of having a compatible service either...

One of the coolest parts of the Google TV platform that's running on the Logitech Revue is the ability to search through a huge range of available content, including shows recorded on your DVR. That's only possible though, if you've got a Revue compatible DVR.

If you're a DISH subscriber then there's some good news for you. Not only do you have a compatible DVR, but you'll be able to pick up a much cheaper Revue at a price of $179.

DISH also boasts a seamless transition between DISH Network and Google TV. You'll be able to use the Logitech keyboard controller for not only your Revue, but your DISH content as well. You also have the benefit of a digital setup without the need for an IR blaster or extra wires for internet access.

Hulu Blocked on Google TV – Talks are Underway

Fri Oct 08, 2010 at 12:00 PM ET
Tags: Hulu, Google TV, Logitech, Revue (all tags)

The popular streaming service is currently blocked on Google TV, but a Logitech rep says they're working on it.

One of the things that's really become annoying about Hulu in recent months is the extremely limited number of devices able to access the service. If you were to hook a laptop up to your TV, you'd have no problem, but trying to bring it up on the Logitech Revue is a no-go.

Junien Labrousse of Logitech explained that Hulu is currently blocking access to the Logitech Revue. Using the Revue's built in web browser you'll have no luck getting your free TV fix. The folks at Google are in talks with those at Hulu though, so an arrangement is expected soon.

The downside is that if there is a deal worked out, it seems likely that the Revue will simply have access to Hulu Plus like other set-top solutions.
