Sony Shipping Flagship Bravia Sets Now
Tue Apr 03, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: 3D TVs, Sony, LED TVs (all tags)
Both the frame dimmed HX750 and local dimmed HX850 will be available soon.
Sony has a trio of new TVs on the way to stores, but some are a bit more exciting than others. Available right now is the middle-of-the-road EX640, which gives you a 1080p resolution, a Wi-Fi adaptor so you can go online and access to the Sony Entertainment Network in 40", 46" and 55" screen sizes. Pretty standard stuff, but the exciting sets are on the way.
The HX850 is Sony's flagship and it looks quite impressive thanks to its monolithic, frameless design that features Corning Gorilla Glass. It's 3D capable, and offers up Dynamic Edge backlighting with local dimming as well as Motionflow XR 960 for absolutely ridiculous frame rates. You'll also find the X-Reality PRO Engine with 3D Super Resolution to help ensure that you get the most out of your set.
Also on the way is the Sony HX750, which gives you a slightly more limited feature set than the 850. You'll get frame dimming, Motionflow XR 480 and the X-Reality Engine with the PRO attachment.

Samsung Reveals Pricing and Availability of 2012 TVs
Wed Mar 07, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Samsung, LED TVs, Plasma TVs, High-Def Retailing (all tags)
If you’re looking for a good size set on the cheap, they’ve got a $719 51” plasma for you. Want the top of the line? The 65” 8000 series is on the way for $5,099.
Talk about information overload. Samsung has revealed the pricing and availability information for its new home theater gear, starting with some very cool TVs, most of which are due out this month.
Samsung highlights some of the impressive features of their new sets, including dual-core CPUs, the Smart Evolution feature that keeps your set updated, voice and control gesture thanks to an integrated camera and microphone.
Highlights for this year include, of course, the 8000 series of LED backit TVs, which will be available this month, except for the 65” behemoth which is still waiting on a release date. In fact, all LED LCD TVs 60” or above are simply listed as TBA, so you’ll have to wait a bit on those.
On the plasma side of things, you can pick up the flagship 64” 8000 series set for $3,949 or opt for a 43” 450 series that’ll cost you just $549.

LED Sales Outshine CCFL in Last Quarter of 2011
Tue Feb 28, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: LED TVs, Industry Trends, Sales Figures (all tags)
LED backlit sets had a huge jump at the end of this year, eclipsing fluorescent backlighting for the first time.
Practically from the beginning, home theater buffs saw LED backlit TVs as the only real choice when buying a new set. They provide better backlighting, allow for darker blacks and, as an added bonus, are more energy efficient.
In the fourth quarter of 2011, the mass consumer base caught up. While LED backlit sets only made up 22% of purchases in the third quarter of the year, they came in at 54%. That’s over double the market share, and during the holidays too, when sales are at their highest.
That’s not to say that customers went into stores looking for an LED backlit set. Plenty were planning on a standard CCFL set but ended up changing their minds. In fact, 81% of people who went in with a CCFL in mind ended up going with LED backlighting instead.

Samsung Announces New TVs at CES Including a 55" OLED
Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Samsung, LED TVs, Plasma TVs, OLED TVs, CES 2012 (all tags)
LG isn't the only company bringing a living room sized OLED to market in 2012.
Samsung kicked CES off with a bang, announcing new televisions in their plasma and LED backlit lines, but the big news is the company's 55" OLED display.
The folks at Samsung are referring to their new set as the Super OLED TV. It gives you everything you'd expect from an OLED set - fast response time, bright colors, deep blacks, slim design - and adds a few extra features. One of the most interesting is a Smart Interaction camera, which gives you Kinect-like voice and gesture control as well as facial recognition to easily switch user profiles. There's been no price announced for the Super OLED TV and no specific release date though Samsung does expect to have it on the market in 2012.
As usual, Samsung put a great deal of emphasis on their LED backlit sets. At the high end are the UNES8000 and UNES7500, both of which offer micro dimming for a brighter and more accurate picture as well as all the Smart TV features you've come to expect. One big change - they're utilizing a dual-core processor.
Samsung has plans for plasma as well, as shown by the PNE8000. The set features a new bezel design which includes a transparent border which Samsung says will create a more immersive experience. The 8000 also has the deepest black levels yet in Samsung's plasmas thanks to the Real Black Pro Panel.
All of Samsung's new higher-end TVs offer 3D and Smart TV capabilities as well as dual-core processors and a few other extras.

Sharp is Launching an 80 Inch TV in October
Fri Sep 30, 2011 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Sharp, LED TVs, Droolworthy, High-Def Retailing (all tags)
You're gonna need a bigger living room.
Sometimes a piece of gear comes along that we can't help but drool over. The new Sharp LC-80LE632U is one of those. At 80 inches, it's an absolute monster, and the specs on it ain't too shabby either!
To start with, the Sharp LC-80LE632U offers full array LED backlighting, 120Hz Fine Motion Enhanced and a dynamic contrast ratio of 6,000,000:1. It's a smart TV so you can get your streaming fix if you've got the internet hooked up. Even cooler - the folks at Sharp can log into your TV to troubleshoot, set up and adjust the picture quality.
Next month, if you've got $5,499 and a big enough room to justify it, you'll be able to pick up Sharp's new 80 inch TV for yourself. If you don't have the room, start knocking down walls.

JVC TVs Back on the Market With Vizio Manufacturer Amtran
Mon Jul 11, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: JVC, LED TVs (all tags)
The company boasts improved quality for its August sets.
JVC TVs are going to be back on the market this August when the company launches a new television line with a brand new manufacturer behind them. That manufacturer is Amtran, who already make sets for the folks at Vizio.
The new line is called Black Crystal which, at the very least, is a pretty cool name. At the lower end of the spectrum are a few LCD TVs. They're pretty standard as far as these things go. You get a 1080p resolution, simulated surround, and four different HDMI inputs for the 42 and 47 inch sets.
JVC's LED backlit line offers similar stats, and like the standard LCD models, they up the refresh rate to 120Hz for the 42 and 47 inch televisions.
The new line of Black Crystal JVC televisions will be hitting stores later this month.
