OTA Broadcast Loses Viewers - CEA Recommends Auctioning the Spectrum

Only eight percent of people are getting their TV through over-the-air broadcasts.

Not too many years ago, before the cable boom, there was only one choice for getting your television. We fiddled with bigger and better antennas and played with rabbit ears to get the best signal possible. Now that there are a great many more options, over-the-air programming isn't getting the same love it used to.

The Consumer Electronics Association says that a survey done in December of 2010 indicates that only eight percent of people are getting television from over-the-air broadcasts. That still seems like a fair chunk of the population, but CEA president Gary Shapiro says it's just not enough.

"Using huge swaths of wireless spectrum to deliver TV to homes no longer makes economic sense," he says. "Congress should pass legislation to allow for incentive auctions so free market dynamics can find the best purposes for underused broadcast spectrum, such as wireless broadband."

Dish Netwok’s SlingLoaded ViP922 DVR Available Now

It’s been over a year since we first got to see the ViP922, but it’s finally available.

If you’ve been waiting to upgrade your Dish DVR, now’s the time. The ViP922 is a slick DVR that’s packed full of features, including SlingBox functionality.

The coolest functionality in any Sling product is the ability to send your TV signal to somewhere else. If you want to watch something on a capable mobile device or a laptop, you’re good to go. The Sling functionality utilizes a separate chip in the unit itself, so your DVR performance won’t be affected.

The ViP922 has a full terabyte of hard drive space, so you’ll really have to make the effort to run out of room. It’s got two tuners, and it’s got some internet features to boot.

Dish’s latest DVR also comes with a pair of remotes. There’s a standard remote for the old school crowd, and a new touchpad style remote for folks looking for something a bit different.

You can pick this ViP922 up now for $649. If you’re an existing Dish customer, it’ll run you between $200 and $400.

Widgets And Web Video Added To Verizon’s FiOS TV

Could FiOS TV’s Widget Bazaar be the next App Store?

Verizon’s FiOS TV is about to start overflowing with widgets. According to a recent press release, the company will be launching their Widget Bazaar later this month with a few free applications including Facebook, Twitter, and ESPN’s Fantasy Football widget.

In addition, an Internet Video feature will allow searches on various sites, such as Veoh, blip.tv, and Dailymotion, though at the moment, no YouTube or Hulu. This will be free later this month to current subscribers of the FiOS Home Media DVR.

Perhaps most interesting, is the fact that the Software Development Kit (SDK) will soon be published to allow open development of widgets for the service. Just what kind of response this will curry from the development community we have yet to see, but this could spell big things for Verizons FiOS service.

Verizon Petitions FCC For Access To Broadcasts Of New York Sports Teams

And the New Jersey Devils too!

Let’s say you’re a New York sports fan looking for a way to get your TV. Cable or satellite, it doesn’t matter, it just has to look great on your new set. You live in one of the biggest cities on earth and you’ve got a few options, but there’s only one that has The Rangers, The Islanders, and the Knicks in HD, the others just have standard def broadcasts. That’s pretty much the choice made for you right then and there isn’t it?

As of this date, Cablevision is the only provider in New York with access to high definition broadcasts of games taking place in Madison Square Garden, and they’re not letting anyone else have it for any cost. This is what Verizon’s complaining about in their petition to the FCC. They say that not being able to offer this option has hindered them in such a way that they are unable to sell their service within the city.

According to a press release issued by Verizon earlier today, it was only after a similar petition that Cablevision allowed them standard definition access to the events at MSG.
