HBO Go Now Available on Devices for Time Warner Customers

Xbox 360s, Roku players and Samsung TVs and players can now stream HBO Go.

The implementation of HBO Go has been a surprisingly difficult process. Different cable providers feel differently about allowing customers to watch the programming on their TVs through capable devices and have been blocking the service to prevent it.

Time Warner has finally relented, and is now allowing streaming of HBO's streaming service through Roku players, Samsung TVs, Samsung Blu-ray players and Xbox 360s. There's going to be a period of transition before it's available on all devices, but Roku says it should only be a few hours for their players.

HBO Go Finally Available on 360 for Comcast Subscribers – Samsung and Roku Still Blocked

Comcast has finally lifted the block that prevented access.

The folks over at Comcast have an issue with HBO Go. Since streaming content from HBO is already available through Xfinity, it seems that Comcast doesn't see a reason to let their customers access it anywhere else. The app has been blocked on a few different devices including Roku players, Samsung TVs and, more recently, the Xbox 360.

Today the HBO Go app will finally be made available to Comcast subscribers that connect with an Xbox 360. If you're trying to connect through a Samsung TV or Roku player though, you'll still be blocked. It's not clear why one was cleared up but the others weren't.

HBO Go Comes to the Xbox 360 on April 1st

No need to change the channel to enjoy HBO content on demand - you'll be able to watch it right on your Xbox.

April 1st just seems like a bad day to launch anything, especially if it's something of great interest to the internet, since companies, websites and bloggers all take it upon themselves to be the most hilarious, but hey, you try to explain this stuff to Microsoft! Still, there are going to be some folks out there that will be very happy to see a legitimate new addition to the Xbox 360 in just a few weeks.

The 1st of April marks the availability of the HBO Go app on the Xbox 360 as confirmed by HBO president Eric Kessler. One thing that needs to be addressed before that launch date is whether HBO Go for the Xbox will get the same treatment as it did for Samsung TVs. More specifically, we have yet to find out whether Comcast and Time Warner will end up blocking access to the app for their subscribers.

HBO Go Available on Samsung Connected TVs Except Through Comcast and Time Warner Cable

The service is also blocked by those providers if accessed through Roku players.

Samsung has announced the availability of the HBO go streaming service on its internet connected TVs, letting HBO subscribers check out all their favorite content streaming whenever they want. Most, but not all Samsung TVs can handle the app, but Samsung was not specific as to which cannot.

Don't get too excited if you're a Comcast or Time Warner subscriber though. You'll find the app blocked. Both companies have disallowed HBO Go on connected TVs and devices like the Roku Player as well. The reasoning behind this decision is unclear, and neither company has had much to say on the issue, but we're gonna go out on a limit and guess it's a matter of $$$$...$!

A representative from Comcast was quick to point out that you can get all the HBO Go content via the Xfinity TV app, though that doesn't do much good for Samsung subscribers without Xfinity.

Dolby Digital Plus is Coming to HBO Go, Tablets, Smartphones, and More

This adds to the already significant deals with streaming services like Netflix, Vudu, and CinemaNow.

People tend to focus on picture quality primarily when speaking about streaming services, but video is only half the story - bad audio can make even the best looking films suffer. The addition of Dolby Digital Plus to a variety of services and devices is a move to combat the problem and provide higher quality sound to those streaming their content.

HBO Go is the latest to adopt Dolby Digital Plus to provide its customers with better sound when tuning in through connected TVs and Blu-ray players. Samsung is also adding Dolby Digital Plus to the Acetrax application that's used by European Blu-ray players.

In addition to the Acetrax app Samsung is among the companies that will be using Dolby Digital Plus in new smartphones, and tablets. Other makers incorporating the tech are Acer, HP, Lenovo and more.

Finally, L L Cool J has partnered with Dolby specifically for CES. He's promoting a new website called Boomdizzle that's meant for collaboration between recording artists and Dolby provided technical assistance to make his Dolby enabled laptop sound its best.

HBO Go is Coming to Android and iOS Devices

HBO subscribers will have access to every episode of their favorite HBO shows.

A short commercial recently released on HBO's YouTube channel reveals a new step forward for the popular content provider. They'll be moving forward with iOS and Android apps that allow users to enjoy content on-the-go.

According to the video, you'll have access to "every episode of every season of your favorite HBO shows," which sounds promising, but may mean that not all shows will be available in full.

The video ends with the date "05.02.11," which is presumably a release date for the apps. Of course, we'll only have to wait a week or so to find out.
