Gefen Adds Fast Switching Technology to All HDMI 1.3 Products

FST eliminates the delay in switching between HDMI sources.

It doesn't seem like much, but ten seconds is a long time to wait for something that should really be instantaneous. Thanks to the need for some handshaking between components, switching between HDMI sources can take up to ten seconds on certain systems.

Gefen announced that they've eliminated the issue by implementing Fast Switching Technology (FST) into all of their HDMI 1.3 products. "Though cutting down ten seconds may not seem like a long time," said CEO Hagai Gefen, "it was presenting challenges to installers when switching from component-based connections to HDMI."

"This new FST was initiated based on our customers’ feedback to speed the switching time between HDMI input sources, and make the overall system more user friendly," he explains.

FST is currently being implemented into all existing and all new products coming from Gefen.

Need to go wireless? Gefen’s got your back.

Say what you will about the cost of Gefen equipment, in many cases, it’s the only piece of gear that will do the trick. While most have pulled out of the wireless HDMI market, Gefen is one of the few companies that seems to be working on solutions for complicated TV setups.

If you’ve got a television mounted against a brick wall, or sitting in a place where sending wires to it just won’t work, you don’t have a lot of options. With the GefenTV Wireless for HDMI 60Ghz, you can zip 1080p/60Hz video up to thirty feet through the air.

Gefen’s new wireless solution can carry high bandwidth 8-channel 24-bit 192kHz audio without any loss in quality. It supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio as well as lip-sync passthrough. The wireless streamer from Gefen also includes HDCP compliance, support for CEC protocols and an Ethernet port for firmware upgrades.

It’s a bit of a niche product sure, but if you need the wireless setup, you could do a lot worse. The GefenTV Wireless for HDMI 60Ghz is now available from Gefen for $999.

Send HDMI 1.3 up to 175 feet over Cat-6.

Gefen announced today their new extender, the “Gefen Extender for HDMI Over One Cat-6a Cable”. Sure, it’s not a catchy name, but Gefen isn’t known for product names, they’re known for the products themselves.

The new extender is able to send a 1080p HDMI 1.3 signal as far as 175 feet over Cat-6 cables with 100% signal integrity. Deep color, Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio and all other HDMI 1.3 features are completely supported by the extender. Additional reach can be gotten from lower signal qualities, with 1080 signals having a 250 foot range.

Hagai Gefen, president and CEO of Gefen says that this product is mainly geared towards high end home theater and commercial use. “This extender was designed to offer professionals a reliable alternative to the use of two CAT-5 cables.” He explained, “"If a building is already wired with one CAT-5 cable, installers can tap into the existing infrastructure at a shorter distance and avoid new cable runs. But with one CAT-6 cable, this system will streamline the installation even further and extend the range of extension."
