MCV Will Launch Dyle Mobile DTVs in 2012
Thu Jul 21, 2011 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Mobile TV, Flo TV (all tags)
The company is expecting to have around half the US covered at launch.
Mobile televisions have always been a niche product and they've never quite enjoyed the success that it seems they should. After all, watching the shows you want while you're on the go is a very cool prospect.
MCV is hoping that its new brand of mobile television services will change that up a bit. The brand, Dyle, and its logo will be showing up on boxes and on technology that boasts MCV's content services. Those services will include partners like NBC, Fox and many others and will be up and running in enough cities to cover half of the country's population.
"When a consumer sees the Dyle logo on a box, they will know that the device has the technology required for live mobile TV, on-the-go, wherever they are," says MCV in a statement.
Whether it succeeds or simply fails like Flo TV, you can expect a lot of puns in the near future. It's tempting to hope for the worst simply so we can feature the headline "Don't Touch That Dyle!"

FLO TV Customers Get a Full Refund

Even better - you don't even have to send your FLO TV back.
When it launched, FLO TV seemed like an idea with a lot of potential. The idea was sound, but just a year or two too late. With smartphones increasing in capabilities quickly, FLO TV started to look a bit less futuristic. Sadly, adoption rates were slow and FLO TV had to close its doors.
The folks at FLO TV said they'd be doing something for the people that bought the device and service, but we didn't expect anything like this. There's no gift voucher, partial refund or credit towards the purchase of something else - customers are getting a full refund.
If you bought a FLO TV, you'll get a refund no matter where you got it. If you bought an accessory for your FLO TV, you'll get a refund on that too, if you bought it directly from FLO TV.
The only caveat to the whole thing is that your device must have been activated on a FLO TV account - that basically means you can't go grabbing new FLO TVs on clearance and turning them in for the rebate.

Flo TV is Shutting Down

Qualcomm is looking for a way to compensate current subscribers.
Remember Flo TV? It was a device with a lot of potential that just didn't pan out. With it, you could watch on-demand and live television on the go. It was interesting, but apparently not interesting enough. Sales and service have been low, and Qualcomm has taken a step back to look at just what they've been doing.
Flo TV is neat and all, but the wireless data is being sent on a spectrum that's worth $2 billion. That's like driving to McDonald's in a Lamborghini – your transportation shouldn't be that much more impressive than your destination.
With that realization, the folks at Qualcomm are shutting down Flo TV and working on a way to compensate current customers. We'll keep you updated if anything is revealed.
