Iindie First Look Studios has announced it is going all-Blu with the early-July release of the John Cusack comedy 'War, Inc.'

Starring Cusack as a hitman who goes undercover as the organizer of a fake wedding between a pop star and a local politician, the Joshua Seftel-directed 'War, Inc' (formerly known as 'Brand Hauser') also stars Joan Cusack, Marisa Tomei and Hilary Duff.

Following a theatrical release beginning May 23, 'War, Inc.' will hit Blu-ray July 1, day-and-date with the standard DVD.

The title marks the first Blu-ray-exclusive release from First Look. The company had previously supported both next-gen formats with a number of titles, including 'The King of California' and 'The Amateurs.' A rep for First Look has told us that beginning with 'War, Inc.,' they have no plans to issue any further releases on HD DVD.

There are no tech specs or supplemental details available for the next-gen version of 'War, Inc.,' but we'll keep you posted.

First Look Brings 'King of California,' 'Amateur' to HD DVD; Adds Blu-ray Support

Becoming one of the few indies to go format-agnostic, First Look Studios will add Blu-ray to its high-def menu when it brings 'King of California' and 'The Amateur' to both next-gen formats in early 2008.

First Look jumped into high-def this past July with the HD DVD-only debut of direct-to-video premiere thriller 'The Contract,' but had yet to announce any further titles. Now, after a window of over six months, they're expanding their support to include Blu-ray with the release of two high-profile but little-seen festival favorites next year.

'King of California,' starring Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood in a comedy about a mentally-unstable dad who tries to convince his daughter to hunt for treasure buried somewhere under suburbia, debuts January 29. The newly-retitled 'The Amateur' (aka 'The Mogul') follows two weeks later on February 12, starring Jeff Bridges as a man who, after a mid-life crisis, attempts to direct a porn movie.

No tech specs or supplemental details have been announced yet for either 'King of California' or 'The Amateur,' but stay tuned.

List price for both titles, on either format, is $29.99.

At press time, First Look had not yet announced any plans to release its premiere high-def title, 'The Contract,' on Blu-ray. However, if plans change we'll certainly you posted.

You'll find disc details for both 'King of California' and 'The Amateur' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule, where they are indexed under January 29 and February 12, respectively.

First Look Reveals Full Specs for Debut HD DVD Title 'The Contract'

Tags: Disc Announcements, First Look (all tags)

First Look Entertainment has unveiled full specs for their maiden HD DVD release 'The Contract,' which is set to boast several exclusive high-def extras.

First Look originally announced 'The Contract' for a July 24 HD DVD release, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD. Now they have revealed complete tech specs and supplemental details, and the release looks like it will easily hold its own against any next-gen offering from a major studio.

In addition to 1080p/VC-1 video, the HD-30 dual-layer disc will feature DTS and Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 surround tracks (both 1.5mbps). Supplemental material will mirror the standard-def release, including the "Inside 'The Contract' featurette, a still gallery and theatrical trailer.

Exclusive to the high-def version will be a new picture-in-picture video commentary, dubbed the "First Look Inside Look."

Though PIP features have a good number of HD DVD titles, they've so far been reserved for major theatrical hits from the big studios. 'The Contract' represents the first truly low-budget, limited release indie feature to receive such interactive attention on high-def.

First Look has not announced Blu-ray support, and no Blu-ray version of 'The Contract' is currently set for release.

We've added full specs for 'The Contract' to our HD DVD Release Schedule, under July 24. Stay tuned for a full review in the coming weeks.

First Look Throws Hat in HD DVD Ring with 'The Contract'

Indie studio First Look is throwing its hat into the next-gen ring, announcing its debut HD DVD release with a July debut of the dramatic thriller 'The Contract.'

The recently-formed company specializes in low-budget but high-profile independent films, and so far has seen most of its success in DVD market, enjoying success with such limited release hits as 'Sleeping Dogs Lie,' 'Caffeine' and the Morgan Freeman-directed '10 Items or Less.'

For the studio's next-gen debut, they have selected the Freeman and John Cusack-starrer 'The Contract.' The Bruce Beresford-directed thriller earned a scant $2 million at the box office, though strong critical notices may result in a stronger shelf life on video.

The film is due for HD DVD release only on July 24, day-and-date with the standard-def version.

There is no Blu-ray release announced, nor has First Look confirmed nor denied any plans to support the rival format.

Specs are not yet available for 'The Contract,' though First Look has set a suggested list price of $32.98, four bucks more than the DVD.

We'll keep you posted on full specs for 'The Contract' and all future First Look releases as soon as they are announced. In the meantime, we've added a new listing for the film to our HD DVD Release Schedule.
