'Star Wars: The Old Republic' is the deal of the day at just $39.99

It's videogame day for Amazon's Lightning Deals and the offerings just might hit the spot. There are a few throwaway titles like 'LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean' for PSP, but at 10am PST, things start to get good.

At 10:00 you'll be able to pick up 'Final Fantasy XIII-2' for $44.99 and at 6:00 you can pick up 'The Darkness 2' for the same price. If you're looking for a good set of headphones for your Xbox 360, the Ear Force X41 from Turtle Beach will be available for $89 at 1:00 - that's a $50 discount from the current price.

You'll also find a sweet deal in today's Gold Box, where 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' is available for $39.99.

New 'Final Fantasy XIII-2' Trailer Reveals Improved Combat System

Tags: Final Fantasy XIII-2, Square Enix (all tags)

You'll find new ways to control Paradigms, instant changes and, unfortunately, quick time events.

'Final Fantasy XIII-2' is bringing a few very exciting changes with it. It's not going to completely change up the game like 'Final Fantasy X-2' did, but you'll find some tweaks here and there that shake things up a bit.

The newest trailer shows off enhancements to the already streamlined battle system which should add a bit more depth for players that crave it. You'll be able to change the party leader mid battle, which is a nice touch, but the most interesting bit is Paradigm Tune, which allows you to set up behaviors for characters before battles. It's a bit like the Gambit system from 'FF XII' but quite a bit simpler.

Not all changes are good changes though. The trailer ends with a look at what Square Enix is calling "Cinematic Action" but you'll know it better as the much lamented Quick-Time Event.

'Final Fantasy' Producer Aims for Quicker Development Cycles

The company has learned from 'Final Fantasy XIII' and is planning to move quicker with new game development.

There are a few game companies out there that can get away with incredibly long development cycles and time between sequels. Nintendo and Blizzard are at the top of that list - a list that has, up until recently, included Square Enix.

'Final Fantasy' producer Yoshinori Kitase says those days are over. 'Final Fantasy XII' was released in 2009 - five years after the debut of the Xbox 360. "Personally," says Kitase, "I think we took a little too long getting it out."

Kitase looks to other AAA developers for an indicator of what works and says that a one to two year turnaround on games is a much better approach. 'Final Fantasy XIII-2' is hitting not much more than two years after the last installment and that's something that will become more common moving forward.

You'll also get a gorgeous book full of concept art - all for a price of $79.

Sometimes a collector's edition of a game is worth picking up. Not always, but in the case of 'Final Fantasy XIII-2' it seems like something every fan would want to get their hands on. It includes a book chock full of concept art, but more importantly there's a four CD soundtrack.

No matter your feelings on 'Final Fantasy XIII' you have to admit that the music was fantastic. Composer Masashi Hamauzu is back for the sequel and he's bringing Naoshi Mizuta with him. Mizuta is the one responsible for almost all of the music in 'Final Fantasy XI' as well as a few others.

You can preorder the collector's edition on Amazon now for $79.
