Xbox 360 Update Includes ESPN and Searchable Netflix
Wed Nov 03, 2010 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Xbox 360, ESPN, Netflix (all tags)
Of course, Kinect compatibility is included too, but that won't matter for another few days.
The latest dashboard update for the Xbox 360 is live and it brings more to the table than just a redesigned look and new sound effects for switching through the menus.
For starters, Xbox owners finally get the Netflix search they've been hoping for. It allows you to search by title, which is nice, but allowing for an actor or director search would be a great benefit. The entire Netflix interface has been redesigned, making it smoother and easier to browse though even if it's not as pretty.
If you're a sports fan, you'll be excited to know that ESPN has been added to the lineup. You can jump on anytime you want and watch live or recorded games. Content is limited, but college football is available in HD and that's not bad.

Free ESPN Live HD Streaming Comes to the Xbox – Hulu Doesn't
Wed Jun 16, 2010 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Xbox 360, Hulu, ESPN (all tags)
The partnership with ESPN brings over 3,500 events, streaming and on demand.
Well how's that for a surprise? We were all geared up and ready for the big Hulu announcement. It wasn't going to be a surprise either, we just plain expected it. But it was a no show.
And that would have been a big hit for Microsoft, but they brought something forward that just might be better, depending on your viewing habits anyway. ESPN 3 will be coming to the Xbox 360, likely in the fall update.
This means you'll have access to 3,500 different sporting events throughout the year including games from the NBA, MLB, Champions League Soccer and more. And it's all free if you're an Xbox Live Gold member.
It sounds like most of the events will be available in HD, but there may still be some standard definition streams.

3D More Popular than DVRs by 2019 According to ESPN
Fri May 28, 2010 at 09:00 AM ETTags: ESPN, 3D, DVR (all tags)
It's a bold prediction at first glance, but it's not surprising.
ESPN VP Sean Bratches took part in a Q&A recently. At the event, he confirmed that ESPN believes that 3D televisions will be more popular than DVRs by 2019. It's a pretty wild statement, but when you look at the landscape, it's really not surprising.
For starters, Bratches simply said that more people will own 3D televisions than DVRs, which is inevitable. A good chunk of this year's new televisions are 3D capable, and they're great sets even if you don't use the 3D features. In the next few years, 3D could easily become a standard feature included on all sets. Whether you want to use it is up to you, of course.
There's also a new breed of internet connected televisions hitting the market, which will only become stronger as time goes on. If download and streaming services continue their upward trend, many people will drop their DVRs for the internet option.
As far as actual usage is concerned, we'll see how that goes when ESPN 3D goes on the air June 11th.

ESPN 3-D Hits Comcast June 11th
Fri May 14, 2010 at 12:00 PM ETTags: 3D, Comcast, ESPN (all tags)
The channel will make its Comcast debut just in time for the World Cup.
What's the fascination with showing soccer in 3-D? It's not that soccer is bad, mind you. It's a fine sport. But the big broadcasting companies seem to be obsessed with providing the FIFA World Cup in 3-D.
Comcast is no different. They'll be bringing ESPN 3-D to their customers just in time for the first match of the World Cup. But that won't be the only thing coming to you in beautiful 3-D.
If soccer's not your thing, don't worry. College football games (including the BCS Championship game in January) will all be shown in 3-D. The same goes for NBA basketball and next year's college basketball Big East tournament.
And of course, what would 3-D be without things getting a little extreme? The summer and winter X Games will be broadcast in full 3-D. Say what you will about the relevance of the X Games, they'll be great to watch.

DirecTV N3D and ESPN 3D Channels Available June 11th
Tue Mar 30, 2010 at 02:30 PM ETTags: ESPN, 3D, DIRECTV (all tags)
Love 3D? Love Sports? Maybe it’s time to start loving DirecTV.
If you’re a sports fan with a love for 3D programming and a capable television, DirecTV has some good news. Not only will ESPN 3D be available to DirecTV customers on launch day, but it’ll be available at no additional cost to the consumer.
Of course, it might be best not to get too excited about that June 11th date unless you’re a soccer fan, since the first program being broadcast in 3D is the world cup match between South America and Mexico. Soccer will make up about 30% of the programming on ESPN 3D; out of the 85 games being shown in 3D, 25 will be FIFA soccer.
It’s hard to complain too much when it’s free though. Assuming you’re already set up with a 3D capable television, 3D glasses and DirecTV service, you’ll be all set when the June 11th date rolls around. All it takes is a quick software update and you’ll be good to go.
The Panasonic sponsored N3D (get it?) channel will also be available on launch day, and will provide a variety of 3D programs.

ESPN Could Start Streaming on Xbox 360
Tue Jan 19, 2010 at 03:00 PM ETTags: ESPN, Xbox 360, Industry Trends (all tags)
Microsoft is in talks with the Walt Disney Company to offer ESPN streaming and interactive experiences.
There was a time when someone who said “I don’t watch television” was considered a snob of the highest caliber, dismissing television for more worthy forms of media. Now it’s the hallmark of a tech savvy consumer who gets his entertainment from other sources.
There’s a core group of people though, who are held back from taking the leap. While it’s not a big deal to wait a day to watch 30 Rock on Hulu, and catching up on Californication on Netflix a few years later is just fine, sports need to be watched live.
According to the New York Times, Microsoft has the solution. According to their sources, Microsoft has been in talks with the Walt Disney Company about streaming sporting events from ESPN live. The proposed service would be similar to ESPN 360.
Both companies have declined to comment, and one of the sources made sure to clarify that a deal was not imminent. “Our goal is, really, how we can get as much content there as possible?” said Microsoft’s Marc Whitten. “There’s going to be a ton of experimentation around business models and rights.”
