'Dark Souls' Announced for PC – 'Demon's Souls' Goes Offline

The PC launch will take place on August 24.

'Dark Souls' was one of this year's unexpected hits and a sort of return to the whole "ruthlessly difficult but fair" design philosophy. Xbox and PlayStation owners were able to get their hands on it, but shortly after release a strongly supported petition went into effect, asking for a PC version.

That petition was heard and, as it turns out, acted upon. PC gamers looking for their fix will be able to get 'Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition' on August 24th. No word yet on mod support.

If you're a 'Demon's Souls' fan that hasn't yet moved on, you may be saddened to know that the online component of the game is shutting down on May 31st. You'll still be able to play the game normally, but you'll miss out on those little interactive experiences that you need to be online to enjoy.

A 'Dark Souls' Announcement is On the Way

Could this be the much demanded PC version?

If you haven't played 'Dark Souls' then you've been missing out on one of the most surprising gaming experiences of 2011. It's the spiritual successor to 'Demon's Souls' and it was an incredible hit, which came as a big surprise. This niche title blew up in a big way.

Namco Bandai just updated the 'Dark Souls' Facebook page with the promise of an announcement about the game hidden behind a wall that can only be broken by people clicking "like." A cheap ploy to get some Facebook love certainly, but more 'Dark Souls' is something well worth liking.

There's a lot of speculation about what this announcement could be and its basically come down to two possibilities. The first is a 'Dark Souls' DLC pack, which seems logical considering that an early 2012 release is what we expected to see.

The second is a much more exciting prospect for some players – a PC version of the game. A petition went out some time ago and it was big enough to get the attention of the folks at Namco Bandai, so we have high hopes that we'll see something develop.

Namco Bandai Says Your Cries for a 'Dark Souls' PC Port Have Been Heard

Of course, they don't actually say whether they're going to do anything about it or not.

Last week an administrator on the 'Dark Souls' forums commented on a request for a PC version of the game suggesting that if fans really do want it they should organize in the form of a petition. The resulting petition now has over 66,000 signatures.

It's a strong showing of support and it's gone far past the forum admin in question. "I honestly wasn't expecting such a massive support," writes shoupinou, "My boss(es) even came to talk to me about this." He says that continued support is what will really help something like this happen.

"If you wanted to have the attention of Namco Bandai Games, now you have it," he writes. "I make a personal objective to make sure every relevant people in Namco Bandai Games is in touch with this formidable effort."

Want Dark Souls on PC? Namco Bandai Employee Says Petition

Over 43,000 users have signed at the time of this writing.

'Dark Souls' is a hardcore action RPG that's gained an incredibly strong following on consoles, but the PC crowd wants a piece of it too. When responding to a forum post requesting a PC version of the game, one Namco Bandai employee suggested that a petition was in order.

That suggestion spurred fans of the game to take action. They've started a petition that, at the time of this writing, has 43,801 signatures. The petition calls for a PC port and gives a bit of insight into why a port would work.

"Given the sales of games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and The Witcher, there is a large market for games like this. PC gamers love unforgiving, hardcore games," says the petition. "An online oriented video game is also perfect for the capabilities of a PC."

'Dark Souls' is one of those games that's thoroughly enjoyed by players that want to go up against insurmountable odds and eventually triumph - something that PC gamers are very familiar with.

If you want to sign the petition, you can do so here.

Game Developers Choice Awards Nominees Announced

Fri Jan 06, 2012 at 11:30 AM ET
Tags: Game Developers Conference, Game Developers Choice Awards, Videogame Awards, Bastion, Dark Souls, Portal 2, Skyrim (all tags)

A few obvious titles are nominated, like 'Skyrim' and 'Portal 2,' but there are a few smaller games in the running, like 'Bastion' and 'Dark Souls.''

There are only a few videogame award shows worth watching, and the Game Developer's Choice Awards is one of them. Awards are voted on by the industry and given out at the Game Developers Conference, coming in early March. There aren't bikini-clad women or presenters that don't make sense or awards for "Best Game Fueled By Dew." It's not the Spike VGAs is the point.

This year's award nominations include most of the games you'd expect to see. 'Arkham City,' 'Skyrim,' 'Portal 2,' and 'L.A. Noire' appear in more than a few categories. Surprise hit 'Bastion' is all over the list as well, picking up nominations for Innovation, Audio, Best Downloadable Game and Best Debut.

There's another dark horse on the list and that's 'Dark Souls,' the follow up to 'Demon's Souls' from From Software. It's not only nominated for Best Game Design, but Game of the Year as well. That could certainly be a big upset considering the mainstream titles its up against.
