Electronic House Features 25 Great DIY Home Theaters
Thu May 20, 2010 at 01:00 PM ETTags: DIY, Home Theater (all tags)
Because any schmo with money can buy a great theater, but it takes something a bit special to do it yourself.
If you've got a good chunk of change lying around, you're just a few steps away from owning an impressive home theater. Hire a design team, let them work, pay them, and done. It takes a little bit more effort when you're doing it all yourself.
Electronic House has followed up their Home of the Year Awards with a gallery honoring those enthusiasts who chose to do it themselves. But you might not know it from the pictures, some of these theaters look like they were installed by the pros.
Some of the more interesting builds include a home theater built for a quick, zero impact removal, an Irish pub themed theater, a transformed garage and a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' themed theater.

How to Make a Cheap and Easy Projector Mount
Tue Mar 16, 2010 at 10:00 AM ETTags: DIY (all tags)
If you need a simple projector mount that’s as versatile as it is effective, look no further.
Matt Burns had a problem. He was auditioning and reviewing a wide range of different projectors, but he didn’t just want them sitting on his table. “I also wanted some truly universal, allowing me to review projectors of all sizes and shapes without worrying about their weight,” he writes. “It would also need to come down when not in use.”
The solution was a trip to the hardware store. It’s not the prettiest ceiling mount, but it’s cheap, easy, and best of all it can fit most projectors easily without a worry about size or weight. Using some eye screws, eye bolts and a nice solid board, Burns was able to create a universal projector mount that serves his purpose.
This isn’t for everyone, obviously. It’s not too attractive, and it doesn’t really have a place in the living room. As a temporary mount though, or as a way to get the projector up in the basement where aesthetics aren’t as much of a concern, it’s a great way to go.

DIY Whole House Speaker System
Mon Feb 08, 2010 at 03:30 PM ETTags: DIY (all tags)
If you’re looking for a whole house speaker setup but you don’t want to spend a bundle, Tom O’Brien may have the answer.
Whole home audio systems are beyond cool. Playing music to whatever room you want to, or as many rooms as you want to is not only useful, but impressive to boot. Over at the productivity blog Lifehacker, a reader shows how he wired his whole house with audio through unused phone lines.
This solution is pretty low-tech and it requires some work and know-how (such as soldering) but it does the trick. If you’ve got newer phone wiring in your house, or you’re not using a land line, you’ve already got whole house wiring that’s just sitting there doing nothing.
It’s a cheap setup too. All you really need, in addition to the existing home wires of course, are some headphone jacks, some cheap junction boxes, a drill and a soldering iron. A sound setup like this may not impress hardcore audiophiles, but it’s an inexpensive and personalized solution.

The Do It Yourself Coat Hanger Antenna
Thu Jul 09, 2009 at 04:00 PM ETTags: HDTV OTA, DIY, Recession Innovations (all tags)
Enjoy HD programming at a recession friendly price!
The massive selection of store bought HD antennas can be overwhelming, even to the most educated consumer, and even the highest rated antennas can provide some pretty underwhelming results. Enter the DIY coat hanger antenna.
For an approximate cost of eleven dollars, and a little bit of work, some coat hangers and wood combine to form a pretty decent unit. While results are mixed as compared to a store bought antenna, the general response seems to fairly positive, and at this price, it’s always worth a shot.
For those already using antennas to get their HD programming, or those that don’t mind cutting the cable for a while to save a few bucks, this might be a good way to go.
