That’s a third of the existing brick-and-mortar locations.

Bad news for folks that love Blockbuster retail locations and, of course, the people that work there – Dish has announced that it will be closing 500 underperforming stores in the first half of this year. Considering that there are only 1,500 stores left, that’s a huge blow.

“We still have a lot of work ahead us in retail stores,” says CEO Joe Clayton, adding that, as they expected, the company was able to run Blockbuster without losing or gaining money – “break-even” as Clayton puts it.

He also says that Blockbuster services like Blockbuster@Home have been instrumental for both the video rental business and for Dish.

Dish May Launch Blockbuster Streaming Service in October

The plans that have been set in place by Dish will finally be revealed, and it could mean a big shakeup for the streaming game.

According to sources belonging to the folks at Bloomberg, Dish is going to be launching its subscription based streaming service next month. The service will offer streaming movies at a yet-to-be named price and will almost certainly start to lure customers away from Netflix.

Part of the reason for the launch timing, according to that source, is the Netflix price raise, which will be hitting customers this month. The other reason seems to be based around content. Starz and Netflix failed to come to an agreement so the streaming service is about to lose a big chunk of its catalog. Instead of Netflix, they'll be taking those movies over to Dish and Blockbuster.

Netflix hasn't faced much in the way of real competition yet, but the face of the streaming market is about to change. With a Blockbuster streaming service on the way and a rumored iTunes streaming service, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

TiVo and Dish Reach $500 Million Settlement in Patent Lawsuit

Dish has been ordered to pay out $300 million to TiVo immediately, and another $200 million in the next five years.

The long running lawsuit between TiVo and Dish Network has finally been settled. The result of the settlement is a settlement that will see Dish paying a massive $500 million dollars to TiVo.

Half a billion dollars is a lot to shell out, but it's not a total loss for Dish. The two companies have arranged patent licenses for each other. Dish gave TiVo rights to a few technologies and TiVo gave Dish a license to the Time Warp patent that started the whole lawsuit in the first place.

"We have tremendous respect for TiVo's management," says Dish CEO Charlie Egan, "and we have always said that regardless of the outcome of the case, there were many ways that we could work together with TiVo."
