'DC Universe Online' Gets 120,000 New Users on Free-to-Play Model
Fri Nov 04, 2011 at 08:30 AM ETTags: DC Universe Online, PlayStation 3, PC, MMORPGs (all tags)
The number of users logged in at once has skyrocketed, giving the servers a real workout.
The free-to-play model is a popular one for new games, or for existing games that are struggling a bit to find or retain an audience. Making a game free is a pretty big deal, and will definitely net an influx of players. In fact, 48 hours after going free, 'DC Universe Online' had over 120,000 new players.
If you want to get your hands on the game, you can download it through Steam, directly from the 'DC Universe Online' website or, for PlayStation 3 owners, from PSN. The game itself is free to download and free to play, but those inclined can pay more for special privileges in the world, like creating a guild or having more bank slots.
You'll need to exercise a bit of patience when first jumping on to the game though. With all these new players, the servers are being hammered and are having a bit of trouble keeping up.

DC Universe Online Goes Free to Play November 1st

The PS3 and PC based MMO will be completely free, with perks for those who pay.
Buying into a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game can be a bit of a risk. Fans of the genre can sympathize after investing money into games like 'Star Wars: Galaxies,' which flopped so very badly. There's really only one safe bet out there, but if you're not interested in 'World of Warcraft' then you're going to do a bit of gambling.
That's where the free to play model comes in. If you've ever wanted to try out 'DC Universe Online' but you didn't feel like dropping the cash for it, you're in for a treat come November 1st. The game is going to be completely free.
Of course, there are a few incentives for you to spend a bit more cash. If you spend $5 or more on in-game items like extra inventory slots, bank slots and character slots you'll be upgraded to Premium, which gives you more allowances than the free version. Those paying $15 a month get a full ride, including free expansions and unlimited chat, mail and the ability to form leagues.
When the free to play model hits, it will be available for download from the 'DC Universe Online' website for PC gamers and on PSN for those on the PlayStation 3.

A special mission to defeat Scarecrow will be automatically issued to 'DC Universe' players of all levels.
The holidays are a really fun time to play games with a strong online presence, and that goes double for MMOs. There's always something interesting in store, and this year is no exception.
The folks at Sony Online Entertainment are adding holiday fun to a good chunk of their online titles, including 'DC Universe,' which gets an added Scarecrow encounter, new Halloween themed pets, a pumpkin head of your own and plenty of other loot that you'll only be able to get until November 7th.
'EverQuest' is getting a few tricks, like throwable pumpkins, and treats, like a special aura. For those that prefer 'EQII,' there will be Halloween themed quests and items aplenty. You'll even get some goodies just for logging on. 'Free Realms' players will be able to get costumes, enter a dance competition and even buy themselves a special werewolf mount.
Special Halloween events will also be occurring for players of 'Magic: The Gathering - Tactics,' 'PoxNora,' and 'Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures.'
