It's a new record once again for the Child's Play charity, beating out last year's offerings by over half a million dollars.

The Child's Play charity had a strong run through 2011, starting with a strong showing during launch events and then an incredible amount of donations at the yearly dinner. On December 21st, the charity reached its goal of $2.2 million, but that was just the beginning.

In the days surrounding Christmas, gamers really pulled together for one last push. In just one week the total went from $2.2 million to a whopping $2,960,000. That update is from December 28th, and it's almost certain that the last $40k came in between then and now to hit the $3 million mark.

It's a massive accomplishment for the charity and it all goes to help put some smiles on the faces of sick children across the country as well as a few in Canada, the U.K., Egypt, Australia and New Zealand. The holidays may be over, but you can donate to Child's Play year round if you're feeling in the giving spirit.

Child's Play Charity Hits $1.95 Million in Donations

With 10 days left until Christmas, that puts the charity within reach of last year's $2.3 million.

Gamers get a lot of flak for being lazy and immature and the game industry doesn't have it much better. There's a certain impression that outsiders have about videogame folk and that's not an image that's in line with massive charity efforts.

The Child's Play charity is one of those things that we can point to when showing off the good that gamers do, but more importantly, it's a way to share the thing we love with some of the people that need it most. Those millions of dollars are going towards cheering up kids that are stuck in the hospital, or giving them a little bit of an escape.

Thanks to the continued donation of gamers and the most successful dinner auction to date, Child's Play is up to $1.95 million in donations. That's a huge chunk of change that's so very close to the $2.3 million raised last year.

While charitable donations aren't a game per se, there's still an impulse from the community in general to try and beat last year's score. You can donate directly to Child's Play, check out one of the many events and auctions, or pick up things from the wish list of hospitals near you.

Child's Play Charity Drive Hits $1.5 Million in 2011

This impressive number brings Child's Play up over $10 million in donations since its inception.

There has been a tremendous outpour of support for the Child's Play charity this year, with over $1.5 million in donated money and products coming in as of December 7th. It's an incredible display of charity from the gaming community and it puts Child's Play at a pace to beat last year's record.

Child's Play, for those that aren't familiar, is a charity that aims to help out by making life just a little more fun for some kids that really need it. Games, toys and books are donated to hospitals and therapy facilities across the country, giving children with serious illnesses something to lift their spirits and help them to forget they're in a hospital for a while - a bit of an escape.

Last year's total for donations was $2.3 million and this year could well beat that number. "Something else to consider," says Penny Arcade president of operations Robert Khoo, "is that as of this week, the community has now collectively raised over $10,000,000 for Child’s Play."

That's 10 million dollars going to help put smiles on faces in hospitals across the country and all from the gaming community. If that's not a fine example of the 'ol Christmas spirit we don't know what is.
