Redbox Top Game Rentals of 2011 May Surprise

'Modern Warfare 3' is at the top of the list, but titles like 'Dead Island' and 'Brink' follow closely.

Redbox has only recently started renting games, but the store based kiosks provide an interesting insight into the rental patterns of people that pick up games while they're picking up groceries. The company has released its top 10 for the year and some of the titles may come as a bit of a surprise.

The number one game is 'Modern Warfare 3' for the Xbox 360 and second is 'Just Dance 3' for the Wii. No big surprises there, but 'Dead Island' for the Xbox 360 comes in at number three and 'Brink' for Xbox 360 takes the number five spot.

Though 'Skyrim' is a runaway success at retailers, the 360 version comes in at eight on the list behind 'The Smurfs Dance Party.' It used to be number one until it took an arrow in the knee.

'Modern Warfare 3' Hits $1 Billion in Sales Faster than 'Avatar'

In just 16 days, Activision pulled in a cool billion.

'Call of Duty' is big business. Crazy big business. Want that in a number? How about $1 billion in just 16 days. That's an average of $62 million a day. That's far more than the average person will make their entire lives in a single day. Not bad Activision.

CEO Bobby Kotick has to be thrilled with the performance, but not just because the number is a milestone for Activision. Earning a billion dollars in 16 days puts 'Modern Warfare 3' a step ahead of 'Avatar,' which took 17 days to do it.

"Engagement of our 'Call of Duty' audience continues to rise around the world," says Kotick. Adding that the game "has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences."

One Million Paying for Call of Duty Elite - Four Million Signed up for Free Version

That's a full million customers paying an extra $49 on top of the purchase of the game. Activision has to be psyched.

When the folks at Activision said that they weren't ready for the popularity of Call of Duty Elite, it seemed a little ridiculous. After all, the 'Modern Warfare' series is one of the biggest around, so high signup numbers should have been expected. Activision definitely couldn't have anticipated this much desire.

The free Call of Duty Elite service had four million signups in the first month. That's a good chunk of the people that own the game - half or more - but it's not shocking that people would sign up for something free. The Elite Premium service had a million gamers sign up for it. That's a million gamers at $49 a pop, paying for everything offered in the Premium program. That's on top of the $59 the game cost.

Game makers have long been looking for the thing that will help combat used game sales and it's clear that Activision is on to something here. Even if a player buys 'Modern Warfare 3' used from GameStop, they'll be paying their $49 straight to Activision if they want the Elite experience.

Based on the success of Call of Duty Elite Premium, you can expect to see this sort of thing showing up in other games as well.

1,600 Cheaters Banned from 'Modern Warfare 3'

Tags: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty, Activision (all tags)

Nice to see cheaters and hackers actually being taken care of, isn't it?

Every multiplayer game that's released gets modded, hacked, exploited and otherwise abused. It's just a fact of life. Of course, some companies are better than others at taking care of those cheaters, and Activision is fantastic.

The game has been out less than two weeks and already 1,600 cheaters have been banned. Rob Bowling, creative strategist for Infinity Ward, says that updates are in the works to prevent these same exploits from being taken advantage of in the future.

Bowling adds in his Twitter update that reports from the community are helping identify the cheaters, so keep it up!

Call of Duty Elite Won't be Functional for a Few More Weeks

Tags: Call of Duty Elite, Call of Duty, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (all tags)

The company was unprepared, but Activision VP Daniel Suarez says they'll be ready to go soon.

To say that 'Modern Warfare 3' is popular would be an incredible understatement. It's reached past the typical gaming crowd and has become a landmark release for the more casual crowd as well. That's great for a company, unless they're woefully unprepared to handle the demand for their new online stat tracking service.

VP Daniel Suarez told Kotaku that it wasn't just one thing that caused the problem, but a group of things. Obviously, incredible demand for the Elite program didn't help. "For lack of a better term," says Suarez, "our databases got hammered with the millions of people trying to use Elite and it couldn't put up with the demand."

Call of Duty Elite will be brought on bit by bit until the whole thing is up and running, which will be in the next few weeks. Hopefully, Activision will be ready for the glut of new players that will be coming in just over a month when all the good little girls and boys open up the first-person-shooter that Santa brought them for Christmas.
