Sony Adds Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more to Bravia TVs

The latest firmware update to 2011 Bravias brings plenty of added functionality, including laptop control.

Receivers, Blu-ray players and TVs are more and more frequently offering customers the ability to control their devices via a smartphone or tablet. If you can control your set from a less capable device, why not a laptop?

That very functionality is being implemented in the newest update to Sony's 2011 Bravia televisions. You'll be able to control different aspects of the set through your laptop including, thankfully, apps that would normally require you to pick letters one-by-one with your remote.

Also new to the TVs are YouTube HD for your high definition Epic Meal Time enjoyment and Facebook integration allows you to share those YouTube videos with your friends. Another new feature is the Twitter Ticker, which displays messages from your Twitter feed across the bottom of your screen as you watch. Could be a fun setup for sharing your thoughts on the game, the Oscars or whatever event you watch with friends.

40 Inch Bravias May Catch Fire - Sony Issues Recall

The KDL-40V3000, KDL-40VL130, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40WL135, KDL-40XBR4, and KDL-40XBR5 are the models affected.

The backlighting system in some 40 inch Sony Bravia televisions is causing problems. This defect is causing some TVs to overheat, or even catch on fire. The company says that there are somewhere around 400,000 TVs affected by this issue.

A recall has been issued in Japan, but in the US the onus is on you to check your set and contact Sony. If your set model does match one of the model numbers listed, Sony will send out a service crew to inspect the TV and repair it if necessary.

"While we have no reports of any resulting damages to other property or bodily injuries," says the company in a statement issued Wednesday, "Sony offers all customers of the affected models a free in-home evaluation for the covered product."

To get your set checked out, visit UpdateMyTV or call (888) 868-7389.

Sony Announces New Bravias for Japan

Three new TVs and none of them do 3D.

With the way Sony has been churning out 3D capable TVs, 3D videogames, 3D cameras, 3D camcorders and 3D movies, you might think they've forgotten that a demand for 2D content exists. Apparently they haven't, and are releasing a trio of new TVs to prove it.

The sets are hitting Japan on March 20th, and all include 500GB hard drives for recording television shows. You can also transfer the video from your hard drive to an external drive using a USB port.

The KDL-40EX52H sports an edge-lit display and a 1080p resolution. The lower end models offer up resolutions of 1,336x768.

Unfortunately, this seems like the kind of thing we're unlikely to see in the US anytime soon.

Hulu Plus is still in the preview phase, but you'll no longer need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber to get to it.

The Hulu Plus launch is still on the way. Eventually. It's coming at some point, but it's not here yet. In the meantime, those who signed up for the Hulu Plus preview can now access the service across a variety of Sony devices.

If you've got a Sony Internet TV or a 2010 Bravia, you can jump on right now and launch the Hulu Plus app from the Internet Video platform. You'll still need a subscription and a preview invite, but you can finally get Hulu on your TV.

Sony has announced that Blu-ray players , Blu-ray Home Theater Systems, network media players and even the Dash will be getting a Hulu Plus update soon, though they haven't specified a date. The PlayStation 3 already has Hulu Plus available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, but that's all going to change next week when the app becomes available to everyone.

Sony Announces a Trio of Edge-Lit 3D Bravias

The NX810 Series will be launching in sizes up to 60 inches this September.

The latest group of televisions to come from Sony doesn't hold any big surprises. They're just nice TVs at pretty reasonable prices.

The NX810 is LED edge-lit, and includes a sensor that allows the screen to automatically adjust itself based on the brightness of its environment. If you're in a bright room, it'll kick things up, and in darkness it will dull itself down.

Sony's NX810 also includes built in WiFi and the ability to connect to Bravia Internet Video – giving you access to services like Amazon Video on Demand and Netflix.

It's 3D though, that seems to be the main focus. "3D is driving the growth of the entertainment industry," says Sony VP Chris Fawcett, "and only Sony is involved in every stage of the platform."

You'll be able to pick up the 46 inch version of the NX810 for $3,000, the 55 inch for $3,700 and the 60 inch for $4,700 when the series launches this September.

Sony Announces New Bravias for Japan

Mon Jan 25, 2010 at 02:00 PM ET
Tags: Sony, Bravia (all tags)

They’re slim, they’re slick and they’re hitting Japan in February.

Most of the time, foreign releases of cool products aren’t worth mentioning. It’s a bit different with Sony. The Japan based company has a tendency to release their products in their homeland before sending them out to the rest of the world, so much of the time Japanese Sony releases act as sneak previews of upcoming US releases.

On February 25th, Sony will be releasing a total of eight new televisions in Japan. There’s a trio of EX300 televisions in smaller sizes and lower resolutions. They’re coming in black, brown, white, and, in the case of the 22” model, pink.

The most compelling new releases are of the KLD-EX700 line, which consists of four televisions ranging from 32” up to 52”. They’ve got LED backlighting – edge lit – and a 1080p resolution. They’re nice and thin, measuring in at just twenty-two millimeters.

Sony’s baked a few widgets in there as well, including YouTube and other Japanese streaming services. The EX700 line is DNLA compliant to boot, so you can stream movies and song directly from a networked PC. They’re not wireless natively, but a dongle can be purchased to add WiFi capability.

The new TVs are priced right in the range we’d expect to see. The smallest of the EX700s runs around $1,300 US, while the 52” model goes for the equivalent of $3,300.

Netflix Hits Sony BRAVIA Sets

Wed Nov 18, 2009 at 03:15 PM ET
Tags: Sony, Bravia (all tags)

Back in July, Sony announced that their BRAVIA sets would be getting a fall 2009 update to enable Netflix viewing. Well, it’s finally here.

Only four months ago Sony put out the word that Netflix would hit capable BRAVIA sets. The initial announcement sparked a bit of ire from PlayStation 3 console owners, who questioned why the addition would be hitting televisions, rather than the incredibly capable PS3.

Sony responded of course, by offering Netflix streaming capabilities to the PS3 through the use of a Blu-ray disc and the BD Live feature. When the service hit the PS3, it left many BRAVIA users feeling left in the lurch, but not for long. True to their word Sony has added Netflix to the web offerings of connected BRAVIA sets.

A quick firmware update and a restart will get owners ready to go with the new service, which offers a large library of on demand video for consumption. For as low as $8.99 a month, unlimited streaming is available.

This addition makes Sony products much more appealing, and marks a bit of a victory for the company. Most new Sony hardware – TVs, consoles and Blu-ray players – comes with Netflix streaming capability, which is certainly a huge boon for both Sony and Netflix.
