D-Link Launches a New Streaming Player
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: D-Link, Streaming Devices, Boxee Box (all tags)
The MovieNite Plus gives you the things you've come to expect from a streaming player, but nothing remarkable.
D-Link's new streaming device does, well, everything a streaming device does. It's not entirely remarkable, but it's not lacking either – it just does what you'd expect. It streams at up to 1080p, it's equipped with NetFlix, YouTube and Vudu streaming, with Hulu Plus coming soon.
The MovieNite Plus is available for preorder on Amazon at a price of $79. Considering that the more capable Boxee Box can be had for just $129, this might be a hard sell to power users, while casual customers will likely turn toward the Apple TV or Roku players.

Boxee Live TV Now Shipping - Software Version 1.5 Out Now
Wed Jan 25, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Boxee Box, Boxee, Boxee Live TV (all tags)
This is the final version of the Boxee software for PC, Mac, and Ubuntu.
Boxee has providing some incredible software for home theater PCs for years now, and at no cost to you. As you might imagine, it's not the most profitable business model. Boxee announced late last year that they would be putting a halt to computer software and that day has finally come.
Software version 1.5 has launched and it brings Boxee for PC, Mac and Ubuntu up to speed with the Boxee Box, or as up to speed as it can be. DRM and certifications hold it back, but Boxee's Andrew Kippen says "As a platform, we have been able to bring Boxee for Computers to about 85% of the Boxee Box in terms of features and functionality."
Boxee Box owners that have been looking for a way to cut the cord may be excited to see that Boxee Live TV is out now. Live TV is a device that connects to your Box and gives you access to live over-the-air television. Unfortunately it doesn't give you DVR functionality, but Boxee says they'll look into it if there's enough interest. Live TV is available now for $49.

Boxee for PC Receives its Final Update
Wed Dec 28, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Boxee, Boxee Box, HTPCs (all tags)
User interface fixes, better network and file support mark the end of official Boxee software.
It's a sad day for HTPC owner,s as Boxee - one of the big influencers in the space - is pulling the plug on the program. Today's 1.5 patch will be the final one issued by Boxee.
The patch itself isn't anything too significant. It gives some better network and file support as well as an improved interface but nothing big. Boxee says the program is at around 85% of the functionality of the Boxee Box but due to licensing issues there's not much else they can do.
Andrew Kippen talks directly to HTPC users in the post on the Boxee Blog. "Thank you for all your support," he writes. "We would not be where we are today without you. But we can’t stay here."

Boxee Adds a SlingPlayer App to the Box
Wed Nov 23, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Boxee Box, Slingbox, SlingPlayer (all tags)
The application is free, and allows you to play live and recorded content from your SlingBox.
Boxee is updating fast and furiously - at least when it comes to the Boxee Box. They announced the Live TV dongle for over-the-air signals recently and today they've added a new feature - SlingPlayer.
"For those who aren’t ready to cut the cord," writes Nick on the Boxee Blog. "we still want to help you shave your cable bill by never having to pay for the same content over and over." Thus, the introduction of the SlingPlayer app.
SlingPlayer allows you to play any content from your SlingBox on your Boxee Box no matter where you are in the world as long as you have an internet connection. You can access your DVR, cable box or DVD player from anywhere in the world and you'll get content streaming in 1080i.

Boxee Live TV OTA Dongle Priced at $49, Coming in January
Fri Nov 18, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Boxee Box, HDTV OTA, Boxee Live TV (all tags)
Boxee is going straight after cable TV with this one.
While Boxee has always been a leader in the cord-cutting movement, things have gotten a little less covert. The announcement of the Boxee Live TV dongle for over-the-air HD signals is filled with reasons you don't need to pay for cable anymore.
The dongle, which will be hitting in January at a price of $49, enables you to pick up free broadcasts of your local channels and watch the HD television live on your Boxee Box. Boxee's Avner Ronen points out that events like the Superbowl, World Series, Oscars and Olympics are all on broadcast television, so you won't miss much if you ditch cable.
At this time, Boxee Live TV will only be available in the US and Canada and will be the only way - at least for now - to get live broadcasts on your Boxee Box. The Box also lacks a DVR feature, but according to the official FAQ though, it could happen. "... if we get enough users asking for DVR then we could take advantage of that other USB input on the back of the box and let a user connect a drive for recordings."

Boxee Will Add Live TV Through the Boxee Box
Fri Nov 11, 2011 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Boxee Box, Cord Cutting (all tags)
A dongle will be needed, but you'll be able to pull in over-the-air television signals through your Box.
The Boxee Box is really working hard to appeal to cord-cutters everywhere and the upcoming version of the Box will be offering even more.
The folks over at NewTeeVee were able to get their hands on a build of the Boxee Box 1.5 update and were surprised to see a new option called Boxee Live TV, which is just what it sounds like. Live TV gives you the option to watch over-the-air broadcasts through your Boxee Box if you pick up a special dongle to enable it.
While watching live TV on your Boxee Box is certainly a nice addition, Boxee will also be adding plenty of the social integration that they're known for.
There's no word yet on when this update will come out and Boxee hasn't yet commented on the reveal.

The Boxee Box Gets Spotify Streaming
Wed Oct 19, 2011 at 10:30 AM ETTags: Boxee Box, Spotify (all tags)
You'll need to be a Premium subscriber to use it though.
Spotify has been getting a lot of love since it launched here in the U.S. As a music streaming service it's top of the line, and different receiver and smartphone makers have been rushing to get an app added to their devices.
The Boxee Box is the latest to add Spotify - the free app is available now - and the company is clearly stoked to include the service. As Andrew Kippen writes on the blog, "After a week with the Premium subscription, I deleted all the other music on my phone and now just use Spotify."
There are two bits of disappointing news however. First, Boxee software users don't get the added Spotify love, only Boxee Box users. Second, you need to be a Premium subscriber to use the service on your Boxee Box.

The Boxee Remote Comes to PC and Mac
Fri Jul 08, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Boxee, HTPCs, Boxee Box (all tags)
HTPC users are finally catching up to the folks that picked up the Boxee Box.
Folks that use Boxee software on their PCs and Macs have been largely ignored since the launch of the Boxee Box. It makes sense of course, since Boxee software is free and the Boxee Box brings in the cash.
With their newest release, the folks at D-Link and Boxee have found a way to please PC users and turn the free version into a profitable business for themselves. That product is a Boxee remote control that can be used on Mac and PC.
"The Boxee Remote Control was one of the most talked about advances with the Boxee Box by D-Link," says Boxee's Andrew Kippen. "We're excited to bring it to all of the Boxee users who've built customized home media centers and want to get even more out of their Boxee software."
You can pick up the Boxee Remote Control now on Amazon and various other online retailers.

Boxee Box Software Updated to Version 1.1
Thu May 12, 2011 at 04:40 PM ETTags: Boxee Box, Firmware Updates (all tags)
A lighter user interface and improved web browsing are among the improvements in the new update.
The latest update to hit the Boxee Box makes some nice improvements in just about every aspect of the device's functionality, from things like language support to new content from Wealth TV and Snag Films.
Users have been waiting for a significant browser update and they're getting it now. Boxee has improved the support for HTML 5 for sites like HBO Go, cleaned up the on-screen-display, and added things like a browsing history and bookmark support.
The company announced plenty of other changes as well, including the addition of custom artwork for media files, local file playback and an enhanced sharing system for Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
