Boxee Live TV Now Shipping - Software Version 1.5 Out Now
Wed Jan 25, 2012 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Boxee Box, Boxee, Boxee Live TV (all tags)
This is the final version of the Boxee software for PC, Mac, and Ubuntu.
Boxee has providing some incredible software for home theater PCs for years now, and at no cost to you. As you might imagine, it's not the most profitable business model. Boxee announced late last year that they would be putting a halt to computer software and that day has finally come.
Software version 1.5 has launched and it brings Boxee for PC, Mac and Ubuntu up to speed with the Boxee Box, or as up to speed as it can be. DRM and certifications hold it back, but Boxee's Andrew Kippen says "As a platform, we have been able to bring Boxee for Computers to about 85% of the Boxee Box in terms of features and functionality."
Boxee Box owners that have been looking for a way to cut the cord may be excited to see that Boxee Live TV is out now. Live TV is a device that connects to your Box and gives you access to live over-the-air television. Unfortunately it doesn't give you DVR functionality, but Boxee says they'll look into it if there's enough interest. Live TV is available now for $49.

XBMC Eden Beta is Available Now
Thu Dec 29, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: XBMC, HTPCs, Boxee (all tags)
The worthy rival of Boxee has launched its latest software - not pulling out of the HTPC space.
With Boxee no longer officially supported, many HTPC users will be looking for a new media center alternative. The XBMC - originally created as the Xbox Media Center - just might be the way to go.
The newest version of XBMC has launched in beta form and there are a significant amount of changes. The default skin got a nice redesign, speeds have been improved and AirPlay support has been added. Version 11.0 is also the first stable Apple TV2 and iPad release.
You can download the media center directly from XBMC.

Boxee for PC Receives its Final Update
Wed Dec 28, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Boxee, Boxee Box, HTPCs (all tags)
User interface fixes, better network and file support mark the end of official Boxee software.
It's a sad day for HTPC owner,s as Boxee - one of the big influencers in the space - is pulling the plug on the program. Today's 1.5 patch will be the final one issued by Boxee.
The patch itself isn't anything too significant. It gives some better network and file support as well as an improved interface but nothing big. Boxee says the program is at around 85% of the functionality of the Boxee Box but due to licensing issues there's not much else they can do.
Andrew Kippen talks directly to HTPC users in the post on the Boxee Blog. "Thank you for all your support," he writes. "We would not be where we are today without you. But we can’t stay here."

Boxee Launches iPad App, Updates Boxee Box, and Adds AirPlay
Wed Aug 10, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Boxee, AirPlay, iPad (all tags)
They've also announced a new feature that will allow you to bookmark media for future viewing.
Now this is what we like to see in an update. Not only has Boxee launched an iPad app, but they've added experimental AirPlay support, updated the Boxee Box and more. That's pretty impressive for one day's worth of announcements.
Boxee for iPad works pretty much like Boxee for other devices. You can watch videos, save online videos for later viewing on Boxee, automatically adds videos that your friends link on Twitter or Facebook - assuming that's something you want - and send video to your TV via the Boxee Box. Not too shabby for a free app.
The update to the Boxee Box brings it to firmware 1.2 and adds a "Featured Apps" section, the ability to filter premium sources, better support for different video files and the ability to receive beta versions of the firmware in the future. It also adds AirPlay, though the implementation is still in the experimental stage.
There are a few more new announcements from Boxee and plenty more details, so check out the Boxee Blog for more.

The Boxee Remote Comes to PC and Mac
Fri Jul 08, 2011 at 02:00 PM ETTags: Boxee, HTPCs, Boxee Box (all tags)
HTPC users are finally catching up to the folks that picked up the Boxee Box.
Folks that use Boxee software on their PCs and Macs have been largely ignored since the launch of the Boxee Box. It makes sense of course, since Boxee software is free and the Boxee Box brings in the cash.
With their newest release, the folks at D-Link and Boxee have found a way to please PC users and turn the free version into a profitable business for themselves. That product is a Boxee remote control that can be used on Mac and PC.
"The Boxee Remote Control was one of the most talked about advances with the Boxee Box by D-Link," says Boxee's Andrew Kippen. "We're excited to bring it to all of the Boxee users who've built customized home media centers and want to get even more out of their Boxee software."
You can pick up the Boxee Remote Control now on Amazon and various other online retailers.

Boxee Software Will Get a Fall Update for PC, Mac, and Ubuntu
Wed Jun 15, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Boxee, HTPCs (all tags)
An updated browser, improved playback, and an easier to use open-source version are on the way.
Those using Boxee software on your HTPC, have had to sit by while Boxee Box users get update after update. The Box got a new interface, more viewing options and plenty more while the strictly software option sat idle.
"At a certain point," writes Avner Ronen, "we had to focus everyone on the Boxee Box to make sure we hit deadlines." The founder and CEO of Boxee continues, " All of it came at the expense of the downloadable version. The gap between the CE and computer version grew bigger."
He says that the company is working hard to keep the downloadable version as up to date as they can and the fall update will bring things up to snuff.
"That said," adds Ronen, "updates for the downloadable version will most likely lag behind the versions of Boxee for devices."

Fans of the Boxee Box will be delighted to hear that the latest update is set to bring some significant improvements to the way the device works.
The primary function of the update will be an improvement to the internet browser, specifically in regard to sites that use Flash and HTML5. Browser speed, load times and compatibility will be improved across the board.
The iPad app will be hitting as well. Whether you own the iPad or iPad 2, you'll be able to stream content from your tablet to your Boxee Box. It's a function that's a bit limited, but it could be nice to have.

Netflix for the Boxee Box Delayed Again
Wed Feb 02, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Netflix, Boxee, Boxee Box, Streaming, Industry Trends (all tags)
Boxee cites security requirements as the big holdup.
People who own the Boxee Box - at least the vocal ones - want Netflix bad. There's no reason they shouldn't expect to have it since Netflix has become a standard feature on Blu-ray players, TVs, game systems, and even phones.
The folks at Boxee agree. "There’s not a day that goes by without dozens of emails, comments, tweets, asking about Netflix. We all want it," writes Andrew Klippen on the official Boxee Blog. The problem, he says, is that Boxee has not yet satisfied the Netflix security requirements.
"The Netflix app is up and running on Boxee," he writes, adding "we watched the intro to Full Metal Jacket earlier today." It's just a matter of getting the security just right. Klippen says Netflix on the Boxee Box is close, it's just not here yet.

Boxee Box Gets Vudu in Latest Firmware Update
Fri Jan 21, 2011 at 10:00 AM ETTags: Boxee, VUDU, HD Streaming, Industry Trends (all tags)
The highly acclaimed rental service finally hits the Boxee Box - offers a free rental for new users.
The latest update to the Boxee Box adds the Vudu video rental service to the mix. With Vudu, Boxee users are able to get high-definition movies to their TVs at the best streaming quality currently possible.
Vudu offers SD rentals, but the big highlight of the service is HDX movie rental. Thanks to a technology called TruFilm, Vudu is able to stream movies at 1080p, with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound and at 24 frames per second. Vudu is so confident you'll love the service that they're even giving you a free rental to try it out.
In addition to Vudu, the new update brings plenty of bug fixes and some much needed tweaks. The biggest of these is an option to ignore "the" and "a" in movie titles when sorting in alphabetical order. Enhancements have also been made to the browser.

Viewsonic is Creating a Boxee Based TV
Fri Jan 14, 2011 at 12:00 PM ETTags: Boxee (all tags)
Google's not the only one rolling out specially branded TVs.
The Boxee Box has been a success according to manufacturer D-Link. They've been having a bit of trouble keeping them in stock, and that's the kind of problem you want to have.
The D-Link set-top is currently the only home theater device short of an HTPC that will get Boxee on your TV, but that won't last long. The folks at Viewsonic are creating their own Boxee device, but it's not a set-top - it's a TV.
Viewsonic showed off a 46 inch television with an Atom CE4100 processor inside, ready to provide you with the full Boxee experience. It's the first TV to pack Boxee and only the second product announced made by someone other than D-Link.
There's no word yet on pricing or availability, but you can be sure we'll be keeping an eye on this one.
