ASUS Launches 12X Speed External Blu-ray Writer

The company says that the new BW-12D1S-U is the fastest external drive available for Blu-ray discs.

The latest external Blu-ray writer from ASUS is said to be the fastest on the market. It's capable of burning Blu-rays at speeds of up to 12X thanks to the use of USB 3.0 and Optical Tuning Strategy (OTS) technology.

According to ASUS, you'll be able to burn 50 gigs of data in less than 15 minutes - not too shabby. This is, of course, as long as you're using USB 3.0. You can still use the drive with USB 2.0, but you won't get the same speeds.

As is true of all ASUS drives, the BW-12D1S-U is stylish. It's black, it's shiny, it's got a fancy diamond shape and it even glows blue.

Asus WiCast Enables Wireless HD From Your PC

For a wireless HD solution, it's fairly inexpensive too, at just $199.

Wireless HD is getting closer and closer to being practical, and the WiCast from Asus is a big step along the way. It's a slick little device that sends HD signals from your computer to your television without too much hassle.

You'll need to attach the sending unit to a pair of USB ports and an HDMI output while the receiver hides behind your television. The device is capable of sending 1080p video, and while it also sends audio, there's no indicator of what kind of audio is supported.

It's not a solution with a huge range – you'll get about 33 feet out of the WiCast. It's enough for most situations, but don't think you'll be keeping the source in a separate room.

You'll be able to snag a WiCast of your own for $199 when it comes out this September.

Asus O!Play HD2 Will Sport USB 3.0

There wasn’t much of an announcement made by Asus about the new O!Play HD2, but details from CeBIT 2010 reveal a nice high speed addition.

The CeBIT show is going on in Germany and there have been some incredibly exciting announcements. The show is centered around computer and IT products, but since those have been increasingly merging into the home theater, there have been a few announcements worth getting excited about.

In a press release Asus name checked the O!Play HD2. We’ve only got a picture and the tiny amount of information they released to go on now, but it looks to be a fairly competitive media streamer.

The most notable thing about the O!Play HD2 though, is that it will be USB 3.0 compatible. Moving to the new USB standard could mean improvements in video quality straight off of a thumb drive.

Asus Debuts New O!Play Wireless Media Player

The newest model of the O!Play media player from Asus brings a few important improvements over the previous model.

The most notable difference between the older O!Play and the new O!Play HDP-R3 is 802.11n wireless networking support. By eliminating cable clutter, or the need to run an Ethernet cable to the back of the device, the O!Play HDP-R3 makes the whole networked media streaming thing a bit easier to deal with.

Also new to the HDP-R3 is a multi card reader on the side. The additional inputs allow the use of CF, SD, MMC, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Duo cards for audio and video playback.

Asus is one of few companies that provides information on every single format their media player can handle without tacking “and more” onto the end. They’d be pretty well justified in doing so though, as the list is impressive.

The O!Play HDP-R3 can play a wide range of video files, and offers support for mp4, mov, xvid, avi, asf, wmv, mkv, rm, rmvb, flv, ts, m2ts, dat, mpg, vob, mts, tp, trp, and iso files. It supports all the audio fromats one would expect: MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, FLAC, AIFF, LPCM, WMA, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS. The HDP-R3 supports the usual range of image formats, as well as four different subtitle formats.

An official price has not yet been announced, but the player is expected to launch later this year at around $129.

The ASUS USB Powered Blu-ray Player

A single wire connects the ASUS SBC-04D1S-U to the PC or laptop computer that powers it and displays its content, which has distinct advantages as well as disadvantages.

Obviously, being able to connect a Blu-ray drive to a computer via a single USB cable without having to rely on an additional AC adapter is a boon. Anyone carrying around a laptop bag which already holds the laptop’s power brick and an external USB drive is aware what a difference a single power supply can make when it comes to packing that bag full safely.

It does everything a BD drive should do. It reads CD, DVD, and Blu-ray formats, though it only writes CD and DVD. It reads Blu-ray discs at a maximum 4.8X speed and DVDs at 8X. The SBC-04D1S-U features a program which speeds up USB performance, and thankfully, an option to turn down the light on the front of the drive.

The downside of course, is that while a USB connection is the only thing needed to run the drive, it’s the only connection offered at all. Having the option to run the drive from an adapter would have been a nice touch, especially for those using their laptops on battery power.

The SBC-04D1S-U is expected to ship late this month with an MSRP of $199.

The new ASUS EeeBox EB1012 looks to be an HTPC that will offer both strong performance and a low price.

Noted for their economically priced Eee systems, ASUS has officially lifted the veil on their newest offering, the EB1012.

Featuring an Intel Atom N330 Dual Core processor, NVIDIA MCP7A ION, and 2GB of DDR2-800 RAM, the new EeeBox is a more than capable HTPC. Adding to the package is the addition of built in Wi-Fi capability and a trio of USB drives to expand on the 250GB of already included storage.

Coming in at just under 9” wide, 7” high and only an inch deep, the EB1012 holds quite a bit of promise. Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.
