The sheer size of it better explains why the devs wanted you to wait for it.
Coming off the announcement that the universe in the upcoming sandbox exploration game 'No Man's Sky' will be reset prior to launch this week, developer Hello Games released the patch notes for the admittedly hefty 1.03 day-one patch for the game, and the amount of changes included make the decision to start with a blank slate more understandable.
Hello Games founder Sean Murray writes in the patch notes that those who were able to snag early copies of the game will need to delete their saves before downloading the update, further noting that future patches won't have this same kind of hard-reset requirement. Players who choose not to download the patch can still play on their existing saves, Murray notes, though they will miss out on all of the new additions.
Much of the patch (full notes can be found here) seems to focus on the depth of the open world. The game's universe algorithm has changed to create larger galaxies with more diversity in the early game. Different kinds of planets, moons, creatures, and atmospheres have been added, and more depth has been added to the mechanics of space combat.
But the patch isn't solely mechanical. The narrative has also been expanded with three unique paths the player can follow. According to Murray, "early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience."
As with all game patches, there are also a handful of exploit fixes and balance changes to make sure one of the game's items isn't objectively better than the rest.
