Will unlock new content on WiiU and 3DS
It started with a since deleted Tweet from UK retailer Game, but hey, retail listings sometimes lie. But last night, at their indie event pre-PAX, Nintendo themselves confirmed: Shovel Knight is getting an amiibo.
It's a big deal just by its very existence, as it's the first amiibo based 100% on an independent third party license (not counting stuff like Pac-Man and Ryu, since they were loaned out to Nintendo for 'Smash Bros.'), but the content is nothing to sneeze at either. Shovel Knight's amiibo will unlock special challenge stages as well as customization options in both the WiiU and 3DS versions of the game, and exclusive to the WiiU version, the amiibo will unlock two-player co-op. Nintendo also confirmed the amiibo will work with all of Yacht Club Games' future games on Nintendo's platforms as well. Smart money says it unlocks something cool in the Plague Knight DLC coming in the near future, but who knows at this point. Combined with the fact that the Nintendo versions of the game are still the only ones that get the cool 'Dark Souls'-style Miiverse implementation, the WiiU/3DS ports are looking more and more like the definitive way to get 'Shovel Knight' into your life.
Of course, the PS4 version was no slouch in its own right.
