Nintendo adds another Capcom character to its party list.
It seems the leaks were true. Ryu, the face of Capcom's 'Street Fighter' franchise, will be taking on all challengers as an official 'Super Smash Bros.' character. Joining him will be Roy, a character from the 'Fire Emblem' franchise who 'Smash' players may remember from 'Melee.' Both characters are available for download starting today. Roy costs $3.99 for use on one console and $4.99 for use on both. Ryu is a tad more expensive, costing $5.99 and $6.99 for use on one console and both consoles, respectively.
Ryu's control scheme was given a bit more complexity as a nod to his 'Street Fighter' roots. Players can conjure up more powerful Hadokens and Shoryukens by inputting the original quarter-circle arcade-style commands. Of course, players who cling to the traditional two-button 'Smash' controls can still execute all of Ryu's iconic moves with simple button combinations, but the increases in power earned from inputting the quarter-circle controls give players plenty of incentive to get comfortable with the unique control scheme.
Ruy also has access to two different Final Smashes, a first for the game. He marks yet another third-party addition to the Nintendo franchise, joining fellow Capcom superstar Megaman.
Roy is a 'Smash' veteran who was last seen flinging around his fire sword in 'Melee.' His moveset in 'Smash' for 3DS and Wii U should look familiar to those who played him on the GameCube, with more powerful swings and a sweet spot sitting in the middle of his blade. Roy's Final Smash is a Critical Hit much like those of Marth and Lucina.
'Street Fighter' isn't the only classic fighting game franchise to get representation in 'Smash Bros.' Thanks to some newly announced Mii Fighter costumes, characters from the 'Virtua Fighter' series and Heihachi from 'Tekken' can all now take the field against Nintendo's best fighters. Mii costumes from 'Animal Crossing,' 'Megaman,' and 'Splatoon' were also announced. These costumes cost $0.75 for use on one console and $1.15 for use on both.
Also confirmed this morning were several new stages, including several retro stages from the original 'Super Smash Bros.' Wii U owners will also be able to enjoy a free new stage powered by Miiverse.
