Latest suit between the parties concerning the rights outlined in 1969 sparked by a 2010 spam email for 'the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Online Slot Game.'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the $80 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. and HarperCollins asserts that merchandizing extends to "tangible" items only, and not "digital exploitations that the estate calls highly offensive."
The suit accuses the defendants of having "with increasing boldness, engaged in a continuing and escalating pattern of usurping rights to which they are not entitled."
There are several categories listed in the lawsuit, but the gambling games are singled out as not only a violation of licensing, but also as causing "irreparable harm to Tolkien's legacy."
