Valve is prepping for alternative options, like Linux.
Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system is a big change from what we’re used to seeing. It’s more aimed at touchscreen use than mouse and keyboard and it’s doing plenty of new and exciting things. It’s also “kind of a catastrophe for everybody in the PC space,” according to Valve head Gabe Newell.
Newell suggests that top tier equipment manufacturers will start finding new sources of revenue and that there could be a fundamental shift in the industry. In response, Valve is not only porting Steam, but also 2,500 Steam based games to Linux, starting with ‘Left 4 Dead 2.’
