Yet another company has pulled out of the OLED race.

It's official. According to the Japanese business paper The Nikkei, Toshiba has given up on the OLED. The company currently has no plans to continue mass productions of OLEDs, despite some impressive prototypes that have been shown in recent years.

Order 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows'

Coming to Blu-ray June 12th

Toshiba's not the first company to give up on OLED and they probably won't be the last. The problem stems from the expense and difficulty of making an OLED television large enough that people would actually want to sit down and watch the thing.

It's not just OLED TVs that got cut either. Toshiba had planned to create 1.5 million OLED screens for smartphones every year, but those plans have been laid to rest. Everyone that was working on OLEDs is moving to LCD panel production and research.
