Steam users should prepare for Valve's next big craze.
Valve's Steam Trading Cards, "a new service that rewards gamers for gaming on Steam" are leaving beta this Wednesday, June 26th, a 11am PDT. In all likelihood, the launch of Steam Trading Cards will coincide with the kick-off of Steam's summer sale.
From Valve, "Steam Trading Cards allows customers to earn Steam rewards for playing the games they love. Those who participate will receive game-specific trading cards that can be collected to earn rewards such as game badges, profile backgrounds, emoticons, coupons, and more."
Essentially, while playing games in the program, the player earns cards. Playing can only get the player half of the game's full set, and trading with other players is necessary to get a full set.
Games in the Steam Trading Card beta included 'Don't Starve,' 'Dota 2,' 'Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,' 'Team Fortress 2,' 'Portal 2,' 'Half-Life 2,' 'FTL,' '1...2...3.. Kick It!', 'Strike Suit Infinity,' 'Zach Zero,' and 'Tower Wars.' While more games will be likely added regularly to the program post-launch, it also likely that the Steam sale will heavily feature Steam Trading Card games.
Based off of previous Steam gifting and Steam rewards promotions, as well as the 'Team Fortress 2' hat crafting industry, Steam Trading Cards will be hugely successful. Some players will want to catch 'em all with regards to collecting, while others will pursue as much tangible free/ discount game vouchers as are attainable. p>
