Editor-At-Large Chris Morris points at several failings that prevented a smooth launch and cites "fears" of "another, more substantial system failure" on Christmas morning.

Set against quotes from Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, the article bemoans the "massive," "mandatory," "last-minute patch" that Wii U buyers will have to download and install "until sometime in early (and perhaps spring) 2013."

Coming to Blu-ray June 11th

Briefly departing from technical issues, the article states, "The update and other problems were accompanied by something else that was unusual for Nintendo: Less than glowing critical reviews."

The launch day Miiverse downtime was cited as the most likely to be repeated on Christmas day, a possibility that Reggie seemed to downplay, "Without getting into a lot of technical details, the Miiverse [problem] was not purely driven by capacity," said Reggie, "That gives us confidence that come Christmas morning, those servers will not be challenged in the same way. Come Christmas morning, the Wii U will be available globally. We know there will be a lot of consumers utilizing their Wii U for the very first time. So we're working very hard to make sure the initial customer experience is a good one."

The delay of Nintendo TVii was listed as an example of Nintendo's "move to online" not having "been a completely smooth one."
