Update needed for changing hard drives, and watching Blu-rays and DVDs among other features.
With the PS4s shipping all across the country, the time when users begin breaking open boxes and plugging in their latest home theater tech edges closer. One inevitable aspect of course is the day one update, which is needed multiple features. including something as simple as playing DVDs. With launch day looming, the possibility exists for update difficulty due to demand despite the relatively small size of less than 1GB. A similar situation for the Xbox One had Engadget talking doomsday scenario.
Fortunately, as was commonplace for the PS3 (and necessary for upgrading hard drives), Sony has made the update available to download online and install via flash drive.

Perform a new installation of the system software
This procedure is for initializing your PS4™ system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.
Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.
The following things are needed to perform the update:
PlayStation®4 system
Computer connected to the Internet
USB storage device, such as a USB flash drive
* There must be 1 GB of free space.
