Midway Games Inc. has announced it will release the first-ever game title for the PlayStation 3 that will also integrate a high-definition version of a full-length feature film.
Expected for release sometime this summer, Midway says it will revamp its popular action game title 'Stranglehold' in a new special edition, in versions for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, and PCs.
The title has been retooled in conjunction with acclaimed director John Woo, whose famous Hong Kong action flicks served as the inspiration for the original 'Stranglehold' game.
But taking full advantage of the PS3's Blu-ray capabilities, integrated exclusively into the PS3 release will also be a full resolution, 1080p high-definition version of Woo's 1992 action classic 'Hard Boiled.'
Though many videogame titles for the PS3 have been rendered in 1080 resolution and/or have featured animations and short filmed segments in high-def, 'Stranglehold' will be the first time that an actual feature film has been presented in its entirely and in full HD video as part of a videogame release, and not as separate stand-alone disc.
Retail price for the PS3 special edition of 'Stranglehold' will be $69.95, about $10 more than the previous version.
Midway has not yet set a specific street date for 'Strangehold.'
Currently, 'Hard Boiled' has not been released on Blu-ray, nor announced for a stand-alone next-gen release. The film was released several years back on standard-def DVD from the Criterion Collection, but that edition has long been out of print. (Thanks to Thomas J. for the clarification!)
