The kiosk-based company is hoping to find another way to compete with Netflix.
Redbox is big, there's just no getting around it. But as huge and successful as the company is, there's a limiting factor that they're running up against and that's the complete and utter lack of an online presence.
Redbox president Mitch Lowe says it won't be a problem for long. The company is currently considering a few options for online capabilities. "The way we look at it is - how can it help us deliver to our customers things we can’t do in our kiosks?"
Going from a kiosk based company to an online streaming service may not seem like the simplest leap, but it's important to keep in mind that Netflix got a start as a DVD by mail service and only went streaming recently. Now the name goes hand in hand with streaming video.
The new digital initiative from Redbox should form into a solid plan within the next few months. Sonic Solutions, the company behind CinemaNow, is being mentioned as one likely partner for digital distribution.
