3D TV Panel Shipments are Up 27% in Third Quarter of 2011

It's expected, of course, that this number will increase even further for the holiday season.

3D television shipment and sales numbers can be a bit deceptive since 3D is a feature packed into so many TVs these days, but an increase in shipments is nice to see either way.

The NPD says that shipments of passive 3D sets increased by 34% while active 3D sets went up by 23%. The difference between the two numbers is likely due to the relatively small amount of passive sets on the market, which means that there would have to be far more active 3D TVs shipped to create the same increase.

One thing to keep in mind is that "shipped" doesn't mean the same thing as "sold." Saying that something is shipped just means that it's in the hands of retailers waiting for the consumer to buy it.

Still, this increase in shipments has the NPD thinking big. They say that 3D TV penetration will reach 10% by the end of the year with a 30% shipment increase expected for the fourth quarter.
