No word yet of a US release, but Sony today announced it would roll out four new Blu-ray recorders this November in Japan.

Although DVD recorders still represent a relatively small percentage of overall set top DVD player sales (roughly 16% worldwide in 2006, according to In-Stat), they've been a rare growth area for electronics manufacturers over the last few years as standard DVD player sales have waned.

Coming to Blu-ray June 12th

Sony says that the devices will be capable of storing up to 16 hours of high-definition programming on a dual-layer, 50-gigabyte (GB) Blu-ray disc.

The new recorders are the first from Sony to support dual-layer disc recording, although the company had released two single-layer Blu-ray recorders to the Japanese market in 2006.

The four new models will go on sale on November 8, with prices ranging from 140,000 to 180,000 Yen (roughly $1200 to $1700 US). For complete product details, click to view Sony's press release (PDF only).

As always, we'll let you know when/if any of these recorders are announced for the US.
